The last few months in medicine 💊 and 🧬 science have been so disheartening.

I haven’t had any energy to post because the amount of time required to explain the damage and nuances in choosing (a non-scientist, non-medical, non-public health, white male who was privileged to have swayed a lot of good people with the 5% of truths he spewed out into a campaign only to leave them without the protections of ANY real public health threats) to lead the U.S. Health and Human Services Department to run the country’s Scientific & Medical leaders to the brink of collapse came true😓😭🥺😩!

If you do one thing this weekend…listen to this episode. This is NOT going to make america healthy! Stay alert on your health and prevention. You will be mislead if it comes from this administration.

The misinformation spewed out by this idiot is a lot!
—you have tried and tried and I don’t blame the leaders for letting their lifelong work of and remain their purpose in protecting.

Why do I believe food is medicine? 🌈 As a Culinary & Preventative Cardiometabolic physician, I see firsthand the incredible impact of nutrients like polyphenols. Evidence is mounting that these incredible plant compounds can positively influence your blood sugar control and may reduce your type 2 diabetes risk.

These amazing plant compounds offer bioactive properties independent of fiber and are currently in season. I found a few on my hike today and it reminded me to post about it as this is a frequent Rx I give to patients of mine.

Polyphenols can help optimize your metabolism, reduce cellular damage, and mitigate the inflammatory response that leads to insulin resistance.

The red skinned and purple rich skinned fruits are where it’s at!
What’s your favorite polyphenol-rich fruit? 🫐🍓

Last month I presented at the conference for their Masters in Nutrition pre-conference course. My topic was on presenting the links between uptra-processed foods, cravings, gut health and obesity.

It was to a lot of Registered Dietitians and Bariatric Specialists and received great feedback with the final evaluations today rated very positive!
😅😅😅😅

Happy to have received emails on how programs plan to implement my suggestions too😃.

Here’s to changing medicine one nourishing presentation at a time! Thanks to the Director of Nutrition for elevating nutrition at the largest Bariatric Surgery Conference!

Rx of the week: practice pleasure!

We are allowed to feel moments of joy and pleasure. What is playful, helps us builds resiliency.

Our days may be filled with pain or sorrow and the antidote is pleasure.

2-3 minutes a day will make it a practice a day.

😍And yes-interpret that pleasure focus however you see fit. …Just make it intentional!

Happy second second half of 2025. Patients have said “yikes” or “can this year be over?”

What are you feeling??

A little chuckle and reminder for those who need a news break—-it’s more than ok to take it! I feel like this has been my favorite thing to prescribe recently!!

Sugar is everywhere so mindful consumption at a young age is important for long term health.

Thank you for letting a few Family Medicine residents and I bridge culinary medicine initiatives into your culinary arts class!

Sharing my lived experience, the misconceptions and eye opening truths about Latino health and sugar sweetened beverages.

Emphasizing my teachings through a personal recipe from my childhood to solidly embrace that all foods and drinks fit in a balanced dietary pattern.

Sharing my mom’s recipe I grew up loving. My kids now enjoy it—and it connects us all to our cultura !

This plate is more than just a meal; it’s a prescription for well-being. Simple, nourishing, flavorful weekday random meal of the week.

As a specialist in culinary, lifestyle, and obesity medicine, I see the power of food as medicine every day and it doesn’t have to be gourmet cooking everyday. But it checks many boxes of nourishing my body, mind and soul.
✨ Culinary Medicine Corner: Look at the rainbow of colors! Visually calming to nourish the brain and sense of busy week in a grounding way. Each hue represents different nutrients. The quinoa provides complete protein and fiber, essential for satiety and blood sugar control. The beans add another layer of protein and prebiotics for gut health. And those fresh veggies with tangy pickling onions remind me that this is packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to fight inflammation.

✨ Lifestyle Medicine Lens: Notice how this meal aligns with a plant-forward approach. It’s not just about what you eat, but how you eat. Take a moment to appreciate the textures and flavors. Mindful eating enhances digestion and allows you to tune into your body’s signals. Remember, stress management, regular movement, and quality sleep are equally vital for a healthy lifestyle.

✨ Obesity Medicine Insight: Sustainable weight management isn’t about restriction, I don’t even know how many calories or macronutrients are in here but—it’s about nourishing your body with whole, unprocessed foods. This meal is balanced, satisfying, and supports metabolic health. It’s a delicious way to manage your weight without feeling deprived.

Sometimes the meal just needs to be a grounding one !

Recipe of the season: find the bright lights where ART meets HUMANITY.

I went to college in San Antonio and my love for spirituality (not religion), philosophy, art meeting scientific curiosity and deep pursuit of bright humanitarian goodness quenched my soul.

I was introduced to a local poet and amazing writer who has since become one of the brightest lights for me as a Latina healer in medicine. As someone who strives to see others as whole in medicine, made me feel whole in early adulthood.

Last night, I was able to bring my son to witness me telling Sandra Cisneros how she’s this beautiful spirit who means a lot to me.

What a nourishing experience to feed my soul

We are looking for the next HEALER in my community. 🤩🤓

What better place to start planting of seeds than in the most popular high school class—culinary arts and nutrition with Chef Danielle who allowed me and residents from Dr. Jess Ho (second gen immigrant from China) and Dr Gerald Coronado (Filipino) to show up, break down barriers, REPRESENT and empower the next generation to think of what IS in their control right now.

Discussed pillars of lifestyle medicine and ALL the big barriers around health including the food system itself. Emphasized positive connections, nutrition, sleep and stress management to build resistance and take control of what we can.

Connected this full circle with my love for climate activism by sharing the amazing local climate regenerative organic farming co-op with initiatives . Gift cards for free local organic produce to resist and join given to students.

This is what DEI looks like!

Yes the work continues, the walls placed upon EVERYTHING right now has become a distraction/obstacle and barrier including fear of ICE deportations, hostile takeovers of government funding to established education, climate and health programs.

So what do we have in control?? We can’t lose the focus on our health, and the choices we still have within our control.

Taking a day off of work is a choice I have within my control. Giving up is the easy part, that’s what they want us to do.

What choices can you control today that honor your ancestors?

This year started off with a grounding moment for all of us.😢

What I think we need to reframe is that “we get to_______”

plus you can add in the mundane things like “I get to do laundry, clean dishes, sleep in my house, wear my clothes.”

Every day are full of intentional choices we GET TO HAVE. We are invited to take them.

FYI-I miss in San Diego!!
