In the last almost 3 years, I haven’t really written anything by hand. Mostly, I dictate. Sometimes, I type. Depending on the cooperation of my fingers, on that day. I’ve written no letters. No reminders or lists. No thank you notes. No love letters.

This is not my handwriting.

Or at least, the handwriting that I am familiar with. The handwriting that I had in some arbitrary before. I practiced writing this, probably 300 times. More. Starting with letter “y” and continuing if I liked the shape. Moving my pen by an inch and starting again if I didn’t like what it looked like. I covered five pages with letters and words. Dissatisfied by the shapes I was creating. Annoyed by the need to buy a new pen that would accommodate my new hand. My new fingers. Coordinating awkwardly to create this new writing style.

What a fascinating thing.
And certainly a thing that I have interesting feelings about. Some are kind, some not so.

That makes sense.
I don’t know you. And I hope that you can hear me when I say that you make sense.

The ways in which you have done whatever it is that you need to do for felt safety, makes sense.

The ways in which you have done whatever it is that you do to show up on the planet, makes sense.

In the ways in which you have challenged yourself, or not, makes sense.

The ways in which you share of yourself, or not, makes sense.

You make sense.
You make sense.
You make sense.

I believe that you make sense and can move forward and evolve and shift, too.
I’m going to keep writing. With my hand.
I’m going to keep dictating, too. And I’m going to allow myself to feel what I feel about it.
Thank you for being here this year.
Thank you for you.

Love,
A

New supervision group for “Emerging RDs” now enrolling!! The intention of this group is to provide a space for supervision and processing with RDs who are in a similar place in their career journey. Burnout in our field is at an all time high. Supervision and community are two things that can reduce the risk of burnout! I think it’s also critical that newer RDs have a special place to ask questions, engage in discuss and strengthen their own inner knowing in a safe place with their peers. I’m so thankful to the supervisors who held that space for me in my early years in this field!

Any RD who has been in the field for under 5 years or in the or space for less than 5 years is welcome. Link in bio for more info!

A special thanks to .mindfuldietitian and for a beautiful workshop on offering supervision a few weeks ago. They’re on a mission to elevate supervision in our field and I’m definitely on that train 🚂. If you’ve been offering supervision or plan to, keep an eye out for more to come!

Our team is thrilled to be welcoming Kennedy Johnston to our team!! Kennedy brings so much passion, knowledge and empathy for people experiencing eating disorders and feeding challenges. Read below to learn more about her!

Hello! My name is Kennedy, I’m a registered dietitian born and raised in Los Angeles, California!

Before coming to Nutrition Instincts, I worked for a small hospital in Eastern Oregon doing both inpatient and outpatient work.

I also worked in a residential eating disorder and substance use treatment facility making, serving and having meals with clients almost daily. I feel strongly that this experience changed the trajectory of my career path and introduced me to the experience of working with people struggling with eating disorders and disordered eating. It encouraged me to dive deeper into learning what it might look like to cultivate a positive, respectful or neutral relationship with food, body image and activity.

My favorite part of working as a dietitian is talking with clients about food, nourishing their bodies and practicing weight-inclusivity, respectful care and intuitive eating and movement. I am so excited to be working alongside Lindsay, Maddie and Andrea to help support our clients’ journey of recovery!

More than 11 million children in the US are facing hunger right now. Households simply don't have enough food to feed every family member and the pandemic is causing the problem of hunger and food insecurity to grow - to a projected 18 million hungry kids this year. We have plenty of food in this country, but it is not getting to the tables and mouths where it's needed most! This holiday season a group of registered dietitians has partnered with and to create the campaign to reach a goal of providing 150,000 meals to hungry kids - and we know many of you want to help too!

Thank you and for getting the word out about this campaign!

3 EASY WAYS YOU CAN HELP:

1) Head to the link in our bio and purchase a box of holiday cards from our partner . $5 from every box from that campaign page is donated directly to our No Kid Hungry fundraiser. Get beautiful cards, support the artists that made them, and each box = 50 meals! - click "Holiday Cards for Hunger".

2) Make a direct donation to the fundraiser in the amount that you choose. We suggest $25 or more which is enough to support 250 meals. Head to bio or "Donate to No Kid Hungry".

3) Share about this campaign! We are committed to fundraising through the end of the year. Help us spread the word, every little bit makes a difference for kids and families in need. Tag , , !

We have an exciting update at Nutrition Instincts! I'm thrilled to share that our Associate RD, Maddie White is now a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES - previously CDE)! This certification requires a minimum of 2,000 hours of diabetes education with clients, 30 hours of continuing education, and a rigorous exam.

Individuals with Type 1 Diabetes have 2.4x greater risk of developing an eating disorder than the general population (Jones et al. 2000). The overall prevalence of eating disorders in clinical samples of patients with Type 2 Diabetes are from 12-40% (Garcia- Mayor, 2016). Furthermore, those who seek care for diabetes are often provided with education that may trigger or exacerbate disordered eating habits. We know it's incredibly important to have providers who understand the intersection of diabetes and disordered eating and are able to provide support for blood sugar management that not only mitigates the potential for disordered eating but can benefit the relationship with food and body.

We're thrilled that Maddie will continue offering these services at Nutrition Instincts with the added expertise that her new credential provides. For those of you who work with the pregnant population, services also include those for gestational diabetes. If you'd like to learn more about Maddie and why she pursued this certification, click this link to read her interview: https://nutritioninstincts.com/interview-with-maddie-white-dietitian-certified-diabetes-care-and-educational-specialist/

As a reminder, we are in-network with Health Net and have seen most plans provide stellar coverage to our clients. We also offer sliding scale spots for those in need and superbills.

Hey Mama!

Like many of you, my home life has changed a lot this year and especially this fall (whoa, did you know it was fall?!). With everything going on what we do NOT need is to be stressed out about our relationship with food. Feeling like we're on a constant roller coaster with eating is something a lot of moms experience and although I don't want to add to your to-do list, I do just want to let you know that I have a completely FREE course to help.

This mini-audio course is for you if...
✨ You're tired of feeling like food kinda runs the show.
✨ You're "good" all day only to find yourself mindlessly downing your child's leftover goldfish by the time 2:00 pm rolls around.
✨ You get so busy with work or mommin' it up that you regularly forget to eat.
✨ You're still stressing over the cookie you ate with your child yesterday.
✨ You're tired of investing in diets and wellness plans that seem to all lead to the same place - you're ready for something different.

The Busy Mom's Starter Guide to Making Peace with Food will help you start to tune into your thoughts, emotions and physical experiences around motherhood and food. Sign up for it here and check out my other free resources while you're at it! https://www.intuitiveeatingmoms.com/free-gifts/

One of our fabulous dietitians, Maddie White was just interviewed by Dr. Marianne Miller (a local therapist we love). Check it out!

It is common for people who struggle with eating, food, and body image issues to feel unworthy of getting help. Maddie White gets that. Maddie is a kind, compassionate, registered dietitian who specializes in eating disorders. A San Diego native, Maddie is recovered from disordered eating herself, s

Hey mama, even if you've done this baby thing before, you're STILL going to run into things you weren't expecting or don't know. But if you've done this before, you already knew that ;-).

My best advice is to research and line up postpartum professionals to reach out to BEFORE you give birth. It doesn't mean you'll need them all but it's nice to know what resources you have available should you need them. My recommendations? A certified lactation counselor(IBCLC), registered dietitian, postpartum doula, sleep consultant, postpartum therapist, nanny/daycare, and pelvic floor therapist. Check your insurance if you have it to see what/who might be covered. Check local community programs. If you're in the US and qualify, definitely get set up with your local WIC clinic!

Are there any that you would add to the list?

How can I love this body when it doesn't feel like "me?". A very common and unfortunately all too often unspoken question so many of us have. The first thing I want you to know is that your relationship with your body does not have to be perfect every day. Or perfect at all! Like everything in our lives it will change, sometimes even daily. But the one thing that won't change is that body WILL BE your home. Some of my favorite tips for working towards a loving relationship with your home are below. I would LOVE to hear if you have any others!!

✨ Validate - it IS hard to be in a body that does not feel familiar - particularly when that body is not embraced or appreciated by society
✨ Re-establish the relationship, get to know it - spend time living IN this body - be in nature, walk barefoot, hold your child
✨ Give yourself time - you may find that a co-exist agreement with your body is all that feels accessible. That's simply an agreement to co-exist with your body. Show it respect but not pressure yourself to fall in love with it
✨ Something that is important to note about body image is that it's constantly shifting. What about the moments that do feel familiar? Even we're feeling physically feeling very different, you may find familiarity when LIVING in your body while doing activities that align with your values, feel important to your identity or just feel familiar. Negative body thoughts may spike when you're struggling with being stuck at home with your [adorable] newborn and not quite sure of yourself yet. But perhaps you don't think much about your body while out with good friends or while at work. There's no right or wrong way. Just start to get curious about how your perception of your body shifts as you navigate life!

For over ten years, I have had the privilege of sharing sacred spaces with mothers. I've sat across from many of them, of all ages and backgrounds, tears in their eyes, pleading with me to help them not pass their food and body "stuff" down to their children. If you've ever had any of those thoughts, this is what I want you to know…

✨ Stop beating yourself up about your own poor body image and food struggles.
Diet culture has been around much longer than you and there is no perfect roadmap to food and body healing. All anyone needs to focus on is taking the next step.
✨ You can't keep your child from having an eating disorder.
I know that can sound scary, but there are many factors that contribute to the development of an eating disorder – including genetics, certain personality traits, and trauma. You CAN decrease the risk and you CAN increase protective factors. More on that later.
✨ Controlling your child's weight will not keep them from challenges with food and their body.
In fact, it can actually increase the risk that your child may develop disordered eating. It reinforces the message that their body is not ok and that they are less worthy of food, enjoyment of food, and responding to their hunger, just to name a few.
✨ You're already changing the body love narrative.
The moment you began to explore the idea of passing down a different story to your children, the legacy of food and body suffering began to crumble.

You don't have to have this all figured out, you just have to be present and willing to try.
