Rehab United

Rehab United Specializing in physical therapy, massage therapy, and more with eight locations in San Diego.

In the summer of 1991, their final summer in high school together before Sean went off to college, “The Brothers Hill” had planned 3 months of friends, sports, travel and fun. On June 8th, their plans came to a halt when Sean received a scary phone call from a family friend that Bryan had been hurt badly during an indoor soccer game and to await another phone call with more details. After what seemed like hours of waiting, Sean finally received a call from their mother stating that Bryan had badly broken his femur and doctors were testing to determine the extent of the injury. It was soon determined that nerves and a major artery were barely missed, but Bryan would require extensive surgery and physical therapy in the hospital for a minimum of one week before he would even be allowed to go home. Sean dropped everything and spent the week in the hospital with Bryan to help him rehabilitate alongside Bryan’s physical therapist. Sean thrived on finding ways to encourage Bryan and guide him just to walk again. The best part was that it didn’t feel like work for Sean –it was fun! Bryan recognized and felt the same amazing experience from the patient’s perspective. Throughout the week they solidified themselves as a life-long team who would encourage each other unconditionally. They talked about how fun it would be in the future to provide the same care and encouragement to others as that “team”. During that week together in the hospital, Sean and Bryan realized they had found their calling – they were determined not only to become Physical Therapists, but to someday open their own practice together and provide a quality of care for their clients never encountered before. Sean and Bryan wanted to provide not just treatment services, but a global treatment philosophy founded on encouragement, empathy, passion, and giving the very best of themselves to others. With their mother joining them from Arizona to help get started, their dream of a family private practice become reality exactly twelve years and one day after Bryan’s “life-changing injury”! On June 9th, 2003, they opened Rehab United Sports Medicine and Physical Therapy, Inc.!

Weak or Tight Hips? 🤔

“My hips feel so tight.” It’s one of the most common things we hear from patients. But what if your hips aren’t actually tight… they’re weak?

When hip muscles lack strength, other muscles around the joint can start working overtime to compensate. This can create the feeling of “tightness,” even though the real issue is weakness and lack of stability.

One simple way to check? Try a single-leg activity like a single-leg squat, step down, or balance test. If your hips drop, your knee caves inward, or you struggle to stay stable, it may be a sign your hip muscles need strengthening rather than stretching.

The good news: once you identify the root cause, you can target the right solution.

If you’re unsure whether your hips are tight, weak, or a combination of both, a Physical Therapist can assess your movement and create a plan to get you moving better and feeling stronger. 💪

How we feel when people ask us if we ACTUALLY went to school to be a PT, or at our family reunions, battling to get us to look at their injuries 😂

when you need us...

we will ALWAYS be there

now look at ✨this✨

When you come to physical therapy, you have eyes on how you move.

Squatting is a great example! Every day we squat to get up and down from a chair, but how are we ACTUALLY squatting? PT's will help you with little or big changes that can you help you even in your daily life 😉

🧠 Hypermobility & Physical Therapy 🦴

If you’re hypermobile, managing symptoms can feel overwhelming — but physical therapy can be a powerful part of your care team.

Hypermobility often means joints move more than they should, which can lead to pain, instability, fatigue, and frequent injuries. While it can be complex to manage and isn’t always straightforward to treat, physical therapy plays a key role in helping people with hypermobility feel stronger and more confident in their bodies.

A physical therapist can help by:
▪️ Building joint stability through targeted strength training
▪️ Improving proprioception (your body’s awareness of where it is in space)
▪️ Teaching movement strategies that protect your joints
▪️ Helping you manage symptoms safely and progressively

Research supports this approach. A 2019 study published in Physical Therapy highlights that individualized exercise, education, and symptom-guided progression are essential components in effectively managing hypermobility-related conditions (Russek et al., 2019).

If you’re hypermobile, working with a PT who understands these conditions can make a meaningful difference — not by limiting movement, but by helping you move better, safer, and with more control.

Continuing education is how we continue to raise the standard of care 🙌

Recently, our team at Rehab United + Resolve Wellness hosted a FREE TMJD education session led by Kathy Wolff (RU1/RU2), who brings extensive training in soft tissue release, CranioSacral techniques, and post-concussion management.

But first — what is TMJ?
TMJ stands for the temporomandibular joint, the joint that connects your jaw to your skull. When dysfunction occurs (TMJD), it can lead to jaw pain, clicking or locking, headaches, neck pain, ear symptoms, and even difficulty chewing or speaking. Because the jaw is closely connected to the cervical spine, nervous system, and surrounding musculature, treatment requires a highly skilled and nuanced approach.

This course was designed as part lecture and a LOT of hands-on practice, focusing on detailed assessment and treatment strategies — including intra-oral techniques.

Why does this matter?
Treating TMJD effectively requires collaboration and advanced training in both the massage therapy and physical therapy realms. Soft tissue release, cranial work, neuromuscular re-education, and orthopedic assessment all play a role. When providers understand both perspectives, patients receive more comprehensive, results-driven care.
We’re proud to invest in continued learning so we can better serve our community with specialized, evidence-informed treatment.
