July is UV Safety Month! Hre’s what you really need to know about sunscreen:

✅ SPF 30–50 is enough (higher isn’t always better!)
✅ Creams > sprays (sprays can miss spots + pose inhalation risks) But sunscreen alone isn’t enough. Think shade, hats, UPF clothing, and avoiding peak sun hours (10am–4pm).
✅ Look for broad-spectrum on the label (protects against both UVA + UVB)

Curious about herbs that support cognitive health and stress resilience?
Ashwagandha is a well-known adaptogen that’s been studied for its potential to promote a balanced stress response, support healthy testosterone levels, and help protect brain cells from oxidative stress.

While it’s not a cure-all, incorporating herbs like ashwagandha, alongside a foundation of good nutrition, regular movement, and quality sleep, can be a helpful way to support long-term wellness.

This month at Bastyr University Clinic, we’re sharing a smoothie recipe that blends ashwagandha with leafy greens, fruit, and healthy fats:

Green Adaptogen Smoothie
1 frozen banana
½ cup pineapple
1 handful of baby spinach
1½ cups unsweetened nut milk
⅓ cup plain unsweetened yogurt
½–1 tsp ashwagandha powder
½ tsp maca powder

Blend until smooth.

Is it a Food Allergy, Intolerance, or Sensitivity?
Ever wonder why certain foods leave you feeling unwell? Not all reactions are the same, and understanding the differences can help you make informed, empowered choices for your health.

✅ Food Allergy = Immune system response (can be life-threatening)
✅ Food Intolerance = Trouble digesting certain foods (like lactose)
✅ Food Sensitivity = Delayed or less obvious immune responses

Knowing the difference is crucial for obtaining the right support and avoiding unnecessary dietary restrictions.

💡 At Bastyr University Clinic, our providers take the time to listen, investigate, and create a personalized plan tailored to you.

Did you know that quality sleep is crucial for not only your physical health but also your mental well-being and cognitive function?

As we celebrate National Sleep Awareness Week (March 9–15), we want to remind you that proper sleep hygiene is a key component of our integrative health approach at Bastyr University Clinic.

Quality sleep can improve mood, creativity, memory, and productivity—plus, it’s a vital part of reducing the risk of chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and depression.

But many of us are falling short of the recommended sleep durations. In fact, 1 in 3 adults report poor sleep, with many only getting 6-7 hours a night.

So, how can we improve our sleep? Start by understanding the connection between your diet and sleep quality!
