As we age, it is normal to experience some memory loss. The most common complaints of normal aging include general forgetfulness, feeling slower, and having a hard time coming up with a specific word (feeling as if it is on the “tip of the tongue”).

However, sometimes memory loss goes beyond what is expected with normal aging. Some signs that memory loss may be suggestive of a bigger problem include things such as struggling with learning or remembering new information, frequent forgetfulness or confusion, notable changes to mood or personality, and problems completing everyday tasks (e.g., driving or managing finances).

This can happen for a variety of reasons such as Alzheimer’s disease/other forms of dementia, strokes, severe mental health concerns, or other medical conditions that can impact cognitive function. Memory loss can impact both the person experiencing it and their loved ones and caregivers.

Grief takes many forms—the loss of a loved one, a relationship, a job, or even the future we once envisioned. The initial shock of loss is often compounded by a profound sense of the unknown, which can intensify during times of cultural or societal uncertainty. Grief is not a linear process, and it manifests in various ways, impacting our emotions, bodies, thoughts, behaviors, and spirituality.

What Is Grief?
Grief is the psychological, emotional, and physiological response to significant loss. While it is most associated with the death of a loved one, grief also encompasses losses of relationships, opportunities, and aspects of identity. Studies have shown that grief can have significant health effects, including an increased risk of heart issues immediately following a profound loss (Knowles et al., 2019). Grief is often confused with bereavement and mourning.

Stress and anxiety are common reactions to challenges that come up throughout our lives. However, when stress is experienced frequently or for extended periods of time, it can start to negatively impact our physical and mental health. Cortisol is a hormone that is released when the body experiences stress. In normal or small amounts, this release of cortisol can be helpful as it can allow you to react appropriately in stressful situations; however, if stress becomes chronic, the ongoing release of cortisol can have impacts on brain function.

For example, cortisol can impact the hippocampus, one of the brain structures that has a well-established role in learning and memory. Persistent, chronic stress and/or anxiety can impact the brain’s efficiency with learning and recalling information. When we are chronically feeling anxious or stressed, much of our attention is being allocated to helping us alleviate some of that stress.

As we step into the new year, many of us set resolutions with the hope of improving our lives - whether it's increased physical fitness, learning something new, or making healthier choices. The challenge, however, is that these resolutions are often so lofty or specific that they can feel overwhelming and hard to maintain. Rather than focusing on perfection towards specific goals, let's talk about simple, sustainable lifestyle modifications that can support your brain health as you age. Research shows that the most effective ways to prevent or slow cognitive decline are not through drastic changes, but through consistent engagement in three key areas: physical, social, and intellectual activity. These everyday practices can make a significant impact on maintaining cognitive function and overall well-being.
Physical Engagement
As we age, staying physically active is one of the most effective ways to support brain health.
