Ultra thin 200 micron Zirconia veneers delivered live in our veneer mini residency with full MOD bonding protocols. Advantages of Using Zirconia for Veneers.
Zirconia offers several unique advantages when used as a material for veneers. First, cases can be efficiently manufactured in-office. If a 5-axis puck mill is available, all veneers can be nested and milled simultaneously, streamlining production.
Zirconia mills approximately 20% larger in its green (unsintered) state, allowing the use of ultra-fine 0.3 mm burs for detailed finishing. This results in highly accurate fits with no risk of overmilling—veneers can be precisely milled to just 300 microns thick.
Modern multilayer puck options enable the use of zirconia with blended 4Y–5Y formulations, offering variations in chroma and translucency for a natural, stacked-porcelain appearance. Green state finishing allows additional thinning and contouring using soft felt wheels and rubber polishers.
When paired with 3D printed dies that are digitally scaled to match the puck’s exact shrinkage factor, finishing and fitting can be done pre-sintering with excellent precision. The shrinkage during sintering also makes micro-texturing easier—details that would be difficult or impossible to achieve at final size can be built into the green state.
Post-sintering, veneers can be beautifully characterized using liquid ceramics such as MIYO, Ivocolor, or Soprano. Thanks to the relative opacity and high value retention of 4Y–5Y blended zirconia, the material maintains brightness and can mask a wide range of underlying prep shades without compromising esthetics.
