San Diego began rolling out its new Organic Waste Recycling Program this year, delivering green bins and kitchen pails to residents across the city. This is an exciting new development that will help San Diego become a more sustainable community.
When you throw food waste into a landfill, it does not receive the oxygen to break down properly and instead releases toxic methane gas, a major contributor to global warming. By diverting organic waste out of the landfill, we can significantly reduce methane emissions and produce nutrient rich compost that can be used in farms and gardens to grow healthier plants. It’s a win-win-win.
Learning to take care of your new green bin will take a little practice, but it will make a big difference in the well-being of our community. Check out these 5 tips to keep your green organic waste bin clean and pest-free.
