Compared to my past, I am rarely depressed anymore. Or maybe it just manifests differently now that I’m postmenopausal. Some days I wake up and just don’t want to . Lack of motivation to do anything is a hallmark for me. But I try not to give into this feeling. Rather than identifying with it I try to just acknowledge that it is present. I love the the poem by Rumi, translated by Coleman Barks: This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows who violently sweep your house empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond. 🧜‍♀️ So, what to do when feeling this way? I try to be brave: tell myself that this is just today. Tomorrow can be different! I am real with myself, acknowledging my feelings and observing them. Then I reinforce that I am able to manage this, by engaging skills I have learned: Breathwork, moving my body, staying engaged in tasks, having some social interactions. So today I swam, I visited with someone with many more problems than I have, and then I lifted weights. By the end of the day I was feeling so much better! Don’t underestimate the small things that you can proactively do when you are feeling down. 🧜‍♀️ If this is a chronic situation, please seek help! What do you do when you feel this way?

I found this Barbie 🦸‍♀️ heroine with my book! Women of all ages are letting me know the valuable life hack tips they are finding within the pages. One friend gave me a tip- don’t read the introduction first! I rarely read intros to books, often waiting until I’m engrossed or even after finishing the book. At least one of the book sections, Eat, Sleep, Relax, Protect or Forget will likely speak to you! Use it as a resource or start at the beginning for the whole journey. I have incorporated an app called Ontracka to help you chart your health journey. 🙌. Access if free when you buy the book! Find it on Amazon and available on Kindle. Audio version coming soon for all of you super women! See link in bio for purchasing

Women are at the highest risk for binge-drinking and alcohol use disorder and are largely unaware of the health effects.

🥂 Alcohol-related liver disease (ALD) in women is expected to account for 43% of health-care costs by they year 2024. . .  UNLESS we change this trajectory

🍸 This is an alarming trend, and has been influenced by the ‘pinking’ of alcohol marketing- intended to encourage alcohol sales to women.

🍻 National dietary guidelines advise women to drink no more than one alcoholic drink a day. Binge-drinking is defined as 4 or more drinks on a single occasion.  Retired women are reported to have increased incidence of binge-drinking while the effects of alcohol on health in the aging population can have even more disastrous effects than on younger people.

🫀 In addition to ALD, alcohol use is associated with exacerbating cardiovascular and kidney disease, pancreatitis and certain cancers.

Is it time for you to be a part of this cultural shift?

Maybe it’s time to just say no to alcohol consumption!  I did!

I’ve been invited by No Silver Bullet 4 PD to present to their international Parkinson’s Disease (PD)  audience on the topic of the utility of cannabis in PD.    Their mission is to help people with PD and their caregivers to be well-informed generalists of their own condition and to help make the right choices on how to adapt and slow disease progression.

You can listen on Spotify or sign up to join the event live on You Tube using the LINK IN BIO.

PD is a movement disorder that comes with a multitude of non-motor features, such as cognitive impairment, autonomic dysfunction, sleep dysfunction, depression , anxiety and pain that contribute significantly to overall burden and loss of quality of life.

The use of tincture of Indian h**p (“Squire’s Extract”) to treat the tremor of Parkinson’s Disease was first described by Sir William Gowers in his landmark textbook of Neurology published in the late 19th century.

Cannabis was rarely recommended for treatment of PD in the 20th century primarily because of societal and legal restrictions. However, there are many anecdotal reports on the usefulness of cannabis preparations for treatment of symptoms of PD and for alleviation of the involuntary movements (dyskinesias) that often plague patients who take levodopa (an oral form of dopamine) for treatment of PD.

I hope you will join the broadcast or listen at your leisure.  Nearly 1 million people in the US are living with PD  and there are so many integrative options for helping improve symptoms and optimize quality of life for People with PD!

A Roadmap to stop and reverse disease.

This is the topic of a new podcast that I had the adventure of recording about my new book with   (AKA Johanna Nuding).  She is an all-around great person who recently started a new business with her sister Crystal, : Texas Soil Sisters!  Two things close to my heart:  Soil and Texas (in that order).

Jo and I had recorded a previous podcast, and then I had the pleasure of meeting her in person when in Lockhart TX on my Texas book tour.  Healing in the Heart of Texas!!  We had so much fun that we did another podcast!

It was a great home-going, and one of the best parts was learning of the progressive things going on in Texas agriculture, healing and politics.

On that trip I also met (Adam Hernandez), a progressive mayoral candidate in Lubbock, Tx and , promoting a decriminalization act in Lubbock, something that has already occurred in other Texas cities.

Enough reminiscing about Texas!  Thanks Jo, I appreciate you!
