The triceps brachii muscle is a large muscle on the posterior aspect of the upper arm. Its primary function is elbow extension (straightening the arm).

Trigger points can occur in all three heads of the muscle but referred pain from the long head is the most common. Referred pain can travel up towards the shoulder and neck, and distally into the forearm.


The long head originates at the lateral edge of the scapula and the other two heads originate on the humerus. All three converge into a single attachment on the ulna.
