Distinguished Service Award 2022 -
Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary
Honoring this year’s recipient, KIM GORMAN from the Bonita Unit!!!
Kim Gorman is the perfect example of what we want every Auxilian to be. Since joining the Bonita Unit, she has taken on any task or position that needed to be accomplished. Kim has chaired the Unit & the Bonita “Holiday Luncheon/Auction by the Bay” multiple times.
During the pandemic when in-person events were unallowed, Kim knew our unit had to maintain our presence in the community & coordinated a virtual auction & letter campaign. This allowed the Bonita Unit to still raise funds for the hospital, but more importantly, to continue advocacy for Rady’s.
When the Bonita Unit needed a new way to process payments for our event, she researched what would best fill our needs & subsequently became the expert on using “Greater Giving”, the software program that is now offered Auxiliary wide. As a result of her expertise with the program, she has become the “go-to” within the Auxiliary to assist with the program. Kim has held training sessions for 3 other Auxiliary Units that have purchased this program.
Besides sharing her expertise with “Greater Giving” with other Units, Kim hasn’t hesitated to serve on the Auxiliary Board as Special Events Director & Membership Vice President. In addition, she has served on the Auxiliary Board Nominating Committee & as someone who is forward thinking was asked to serve on the Auxiliary Strategic Planning Committee.
Kim’s ever-present smile & can-do positive attitude would be an asset for any organization; we are honored that she has chosen to share her multiple talents within our organization!
CONGRATULATIONS KIM!!

This award is given to a member of the Rady Children’s Hospital Staff who has demonstrated outstanding support and friendship to the Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary. (This is not necessarily an annual award.)
Honoring Sarah Cooper, VP External Affairs Operations Rady Children's Hospital Foundation
About 5 years ago, Sarah made clear that her goal was to facilitate volunteering for our Auxiliary members. For example, Sarah was instrumental in transitioning the Auxiliary to credit cards in lieu of checkbooks.
Sarah negotiated a contract with Quickbooks online for access for all units of the Auxiliary. This was extremely helpful as there is no longer a need to download an app to a computer. It eases transition between unit treasurers, when needed.
Sarah also realized the need of the Auxiliary units to have a platform to assist with their individual fundraising events. She contracted with Greater Giving to fill this need and offered it to all units.
Sarah continues to search for a compliant platform that can be used Auxiliary-wide for credit card processing.
The new website was directed by Sarah's department. She continues to consult with the Auxiliary to ensure the new website meet our needs. Sarah oversaw the streamlining of the Auxiliary’s online membership renewals.
She has the best interest of the Auxiliary in mind when making operational decisions.
Thank you Alpine unit for another year of fun and festivity making holiday Cornucopia centerpieces! The 'store' with goodies like pickled veggies, honey, jams, aprons etc was also a great find! Thank you for all you do for the Auxiliary!
Sidney has one of the most important jobs at Rady Children’s Hospital, providing a daily dose of comfort & care to all patients and families. For some, it’s their first visit and they’ve laid awake all night in fear of coming here for the first time. Remember your feelings or those of your child's going to an urgent visit? These patients are often scared and/or frightened. Sidney has a bestowed a gift of empowering everybody he greets. He shows up everyday, sharing his gift and caring for all the people he meets. When people drive up, I’ve heard him ask, “Are you here to pick up a patient today? Do you need a mask?"
Sidney brightens peoples’ days. He makes sure everybody has what they need or knows where to go. When they exit, I’ve heard him ask children,
“It wasn’t so bad, was it?” “See you next time,” and waves goodbye.
Upon entering, Sidney proudly wears a blue cap & Rady Children’s shirt. You’ll find him caring for carload after carload of families, dancing in place with a bright smile & cheery voice. Sidney has ONE job, but performs many! He's an outstanding steward for Rady Children’s Hospital & Auxiliary. Sidney continues to demonstrate support and everlasting friendship to the Auxiliary. It’s amazing how this Sidney touches so many patients and families, and auxiliary members ...everyday.
Very Special Person Award 2022
This award is given to a member of the Rady Children’s Hospital Staff who has demonstrated outstanding support and friendship to the Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary. (This is not necessarily an annual award.)
Honoring Sidney Michael
Every morning, Sidney sets up a booth in the parking lot at the Plaza Building on Kearny Villa Road, where the Foundation & the Auxiliary Offices are both located, not far from Rady Children’s Hospital campus.
He is the first person to greet you into the parking lot. Imagine the number of young patients and families that pass by this parking booth before being seen by a doctor or medical professional for a developmental evaluation, physical therapy, or a psychiatric appointment? He sees the youngest patients that visit departments such as KidSTART or Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. His role is both parking lot attendant & part greeter. Every car that drives up must stop at the booth, which he decorates with action figures, stuffed animals, and small trinkets to cheer a child.

Honoring Carrie Weiland…
Carrie Weiland is a San Diego staple. As the band leader of Atomic Groove, she has been a part of the North Coast’s Date Night for a Cause event for the last 9 years. Over that time, she has proved instrumental in the events success. When the North Coast Unit was looking for a fun, local band to get it’s guests dancing, Carrie and Atomic Groove were the perfect fit. Carrie has always worked with the North Coast unit, by giving us discounts while we got our event up and going and providing extra band members and Fly Girlz at each event at no additional cost. No matter what the theme, she and her band come dressed ready to support the event in any possible way. They go above and beyond by helping advertise our event in their eblasts and social media and there is no way Date Night could be as successful if they were not involved.
The North Cost Unit is proud to work with Carrie and Atomic Groove.
Pictured is Carrie’s 'Flygirl' mate, Jessica Janc, accepting on her behalf and also a picture of the original Flygirl, founder of Atomic Groove and one of our Rady Children's Auxiliary Honorary Member's 2022, Carrie Weiland.

Honoring Dr Nick Holmes…
Dr. Nick Holmes has been a strong supporter of the Auxiliary for many years. Every year he works on the list of designated departments for the Auxiliary to choose from for the upcoming year. There have been times where the Auxiliary has asked to fund something not on the list, and he has worked with us to get that department on the list. If you have been on the board of directors, you are familiar with the guidance and advice he gives during our end of the year designation of funds meeting. His advice is invaluable to the board of directors as we make our decisions to direct our unrestricted funds to where they are needed the most.
When working with Dr. Holmes, you can feel his genuine admiration and respect for the Auxiliary and all we do for the Hospital. He is an extremely busy man but always makes time for the Auxiliary.

Honoring Sandy Peretti – Husband Bruce accepting on her behalf.
Sandy’s collaboration with the RCHA - Del Cerro Unit began 10 years ago with 3 beautiful, crocheted baby blankets that sold in our event Boutique. Over the next 10 years, Sandy crocheted over 800 pieces for our Boutique including dogs, cats, monkeys, lambs, lobsters, zebras, sharks, tooth fairies, mermaids, dinosaurs, and the list goes on. Whether you do handwork or not, you know that is an impressive body of work. Sandy never said no to a special request. She never asked for help with any cost. Not Covid, not even a diagnosis of cancer, changed Sandy’s generous heart. Her 10 year effort raised more than $12,000 for Rady Children’s Hospital. Sandy’s art, every crocheted piece, was made with love and meant to bring joy to its eventual owner while benefitting the sick and injured children in her community. Sadly, Sandy passed away this past July 4, 2022. We will miss her and the joy she brought us through her craft.
