Is My Child Ready for Potty Training? 🚽💭

This is one of the biggest questions parents ask—and the truth is, it’s just as much a transition for you as it is for your child.

✨ The good news? Readiness might be simpler than you think!
If your child can:
✔️ Cooperate with caregivers
✔️ Stay dry for 15+ mins
✔️ Sit on the toilet for a few minutes calmly

They might be ready to start! 🙌

And don’t worry—they don’t need to be a certain age, have perfect speech, or even tell you when they need to go.

Not sure if now’s the right time? Some signs it might be best to wait include:
đźš« Ongoing constipation
đźš« Big life transitions (new school, new sibling, dropped nap)
đźš« Struggling with basic routines or transitions

Every child’s timeline is different—and that’s okay 💛
If you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure where to begin—we’re here to help! Reach out anytime 💬

Join Our Tween & Teen Girls Support Groups!

San Diego Kids First is thrilled to announce that we’re opening new groups for girls aged 12–17! All girls in this age range are welcome, and to create the most supportive and meaningful experience, participants will be placed into smaller groups with peers close in age.

Middle and high school can be a challenging time, filled with unique pressures and hurdles. Many of the girls we see struggle with managing stress, anxiety, low self-esteem, or navigating the complexities of school, friendships, and family expectations. Social dynamics like peer pressure, friendship conflicts, and the impact of social media can make these years especially tough—not just for the teens but for their families as well.

We understand how overwhelming this can feel, which is why we’re offering a specialized Tween & Teen Girls Empowerment Group designed to help your daughter thrive emotionally and socially.

This supportive and empowering group provides a safe, judgment-free space where girls can:

- Build confidence and self-esteem
- Learn healthy coping strategies
- Manage stress and emotions effectively
- Manage stress and emotions effectively

Led by our highly experienced psychologist, Dr. Anna Basanty, Ph.D., NCSP, these groups focus on equipping tween and teen girls with practical, evidence-based tools to face life’s challenges with resilience and courage. Dr. Basanty incorporates approaches such as:

- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to challenge unhelpful thought patterns
- Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to foster mindfulness, interpersonal skills, emotional regulation, and distress tolerance

Through engaging activities, open discussions, and professional guidance, each session helps girls build the confidence and skills they need to navigate life’s ups and downs with greater ease.

At our practice, we are deeply committed to supporting the mental health and emotional well-being of children and teens. Our girls’ groups provide the opportunity for genuine connection, where girls can share experiences, learn from one another, and grow together in a supportive environment.

Spots are limited to ensure an intimate and meaningful group experience. Sign up today to secure your spot!

If you have any questions or would like to register your daughter for our groups, please contact our office manager, Jenaya, and she will be happy to help you! (858)692-4187 // contact@sdkidsfirst.com

Dear Parents of Children in Preschool through 6th grade:
I wanted to take a moment to highlight the ways I am able to support your child’s development and success. Whether I provide sessions in school or in the clinic, my focus is on addressing each child’s unique needs and helping them thrive both academically and socially.

Helping Children Succeed in School

For children in preschool and beyond, I provide in-school support to collaborate with teachers and implement strategies that help your child regulate and engage in the classroom. These services include:

- Sensory Regulation Support: Assisting children in managing sensory input to stay focused and calm.
- Task Initiation Strategies: Helping students begin tasks independently and stay engaged.
- Classroom Education: Training teachers on effective techniques to support your child’s needs.
- By working directly with teachers and school staff, we aim to create a supportive and understanding environment where your child can flourish.

Comprehensive Clinic-Based and School/Preschool-Based Services

In the clinic, I work one-on-one with children to build foundational skills that impact their daily lives. Sessions may focus on:

- Developmental Skills: Strengthening fine and gross motor abilities to support tasks like writing, cutting, and coordination.
- Interoception and Body Awareness: Helping children become more in tune with their bodies to recognize and respond to their own needs.
- Social Skills Education: Teaching children how to navigate friendships, communicate effectively, and understand social cues.
- Sensory Strategies: Identifying and practicing tools that help your child self-regulate and feel more comfortable in their environment.

Why These Services Matter

Many children experience challenges like staying focused, managing emotions, or understanding their body’s signals. By addressing these areas both at school and in the clinic, we can:

- Improve emotional and sensory regulation.
- Foster independence in task initiation and completion.
- Build confidence in social interactions.
-Help children feel more grounded and connected to their bodies.

If you have any questions about whether these services are right for your child, please reach out to our office manager, Jenaya, for more information. (858)692-4187 // contact@sdkidsfirst.com

LOW COST SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING LESSONS

Due to the high demand for our Social Emotional Learning (SEL) services and our commitment to making them widely accessible, we’re excited to expand our availability by offering additional low-fee, in-office SEL sessions.

We are pleased to expand our low-fee Social Emotional Learning (SEL) sessions with Jenaya Vasquez, B.A., under the supervision of our Director of Educational Psychology, Kaydon Schanberger, M.Ed.

What to Expect:
Jenaya and Kaydon will work as a team and host dual intake sessions with caregivers to collaborate on a treatment plan for your child. Afterwards, Jenaya will meet with your child individually for follow up SEL sessions. Through weekly consultation with Kaydon, Jenaya will modify and update your child's treatment plan as needed. Through this method, we ensure that your family receives the highest level of care, while preserving low cost fees.

Social Emotional Learning is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions, feel and show empathy for others, establish, maintain supportive relationships, and achieve personal and collective goals.

With SEL support and education, children are better able to identify and label emotions, build empathy, identify the appropriate response or coping skill, self-regulate, initiate peer and adult interaction, and practice responding to big versus little problems.

There are 5 areas we can address in SEL
1. Self-awareness
2. Self-management
3. Social awareness
4. Relationship skills
5. Responsible decision-making.

If you have any questions or would like to schedule an appointment with Jenaya, please email or call our office at contact@sdkidsfirst.com / (858) 692-4187 and we will be happy to help you!

“I am excited to offer a 5-week sensory regulation group designed to help children better understand their unique sensory preferences and how they impact daily life! Everyone processes sensory input differently, and these differences can affect how children focus in school, manage emotions, make friends, and even engage in play. In this group, we’ll explore our senses and learn practical strategies to help regulate our sensory systems. A regulated sensory system helps children manage their emotions, stay focused, and respond appropriately to their environment, which supports learning, social engagement, and overall well-being.”

Unlocking Calm: 5 Essential Tips for Co-Regulating with Your Child from Dr. Heidi Joachims, Occupational Therapist

"Here at SDKF, my colleagues and I are often asked for tools and strategies on how to help our children (or teens) regulate their emotions. Our wonderful occupational therapist, Dr Heidi Joachims, “Dr. Jo,” has written an exceptional article on co-regulation, or the ability of a parent, guardian, teacher, or caregiver to help a child/teen self-regulate and self-soothe. The strategies outlined in this article can be very effective when used correctly if your child is affected by sensory input and/or sensory sensitivities. When utilized at home, these strategies, along with others, can help caregivers and kids alike to learn how to effectively self-regulate. Dr. Jo can be reached for a complimentary telephone consultation should you have any questions after reading this article."

- Dr. Deborah Pontillo, Director, San Diego Kids First

Five ways to co-regulate with your child

1. Offer deep pressure: Deep pressure, such as through firm hugs, compressions, or weighted blankets, provides calming sensory input that helps regulate the nervous system. This type of sensory input can be especially effective in co-regulation, helping children feel grounded and safe in their bodies.

2. Use rhythmic calming techniques: Rhythmic activities, such as rocking, swinging, or gentle bouncing, provide repetitive sensory input that can be very calming. Try swaying in a rocking chair, swinging on a swing, or using rhythmic movements like drumming, tapping, stomping, or marching in place.

3. Create a Sensory-Friendly Environment: Modifying the environment by reducing sensory input can help your child feel safe and regulate themselves. You can facilitate this by dimming the lights, reducing background noise, and providing access to calming sensory tools such as fidget toys, noise-canceling headphones, or a beanbag chair.

4. Slow down: Slowing down helps co-regulation by allowing your child's nervous system to calm and process sensory input more effectively, creating a sense of safety and reducing overwhelm. Ways to slow down include building in extra time for transitions, simplifying morning routines, and prioritizing what matters.

5. Use grounding techniques together: Engage in grounding activities like deep breathing or sensory exercises with your child. For example, practicing “5-4-3-2-1” (name 5 things you see, 4 things you feel, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste) helps both of you return to the present moment, calming the nervous system and building co-regulation skills.

For further inquiries about co-regulation or to work individually with a professional to enhance you or your child’s self-regulation and co-regulation skills, please feel free to schedule an appointment with our occupational therapist, Dr. Jo, by contacting us at contact@sdkidsfirst.com or (858) 692-418.
