Who’s training who?? 😜

When training, we usually tell dogs “yes” when they get something right or do something that we like.

But here, after I spent time scratching Stella, she told me ”Yes!”

🎉 Today’s the day! 🎉

Every year we get bunnies in our yard and every year it’s a struggle 🙃

While the bunnies are still in their nest, we take Stella in the backyard on her leash.

It only took 2 days of this pattern before Stella started adjusting her typical “outside” request to include “outside leash” 🤯🤯

Words show how quickly dogs pick up on new patterns and routines! 🐶🧠

She led me up to my son’s room where there’s a rug she loves to lay on!

I love that Stella could tell me she wanted us to come with her. If she didn’t want us to join, she probably just would have walked upstairs to get something quiet time.

But we followed her up and played while she relaxed and watched ❤️

Atticus’ foster mom and I added more buttons 🎉

“All done” was one of our selections because it’s a great way to get practice using words for reasons other than requesting.

Plus, it gives Atticus a way to let us know when he doesn’t want to do something or wants it to stop!

Communication isn’t just about requests. It’s about connection.

Before Stella pressed a button, she made eye contact with me, sniffed Mia, and then walked to her board to say my baby’s name. She didn’t want anything, she just noticed something and wanted to share it.

Over the years, I’ve seen this again and again: dogs don’t only use buttons to ask for treats or play. They use them to say what they know, what they see, and what they’re thinking about.

The concept of “talking dogs” sounds much crazier than it is!

It’s pretty simple actually: dogs understand many of the words we say to them. Buttons give dogs a way to say the words they’re understanding and hearing every day.
