🌞 Summer is here, and so are the mosquitoes! Let’s talk about insect repellent: what’s safe, what’s effective, and when to use stronger options.

In the face of diseases like Zika, West Nile virus, dengue fever, and Lyme disease, where the long-term consequences of contracting these insect-borne conditions can be severe, we cannot rely exclusively on natural, plant-based repellants as they’re just not as effective.

If you live in an area where any of these are present, you’ll likely want to turn to DEET. This bug spray ingredient gets a bad rap mostly because people use it incorrectly, or choose products with concentrations that are harmful.

DEET-based sprays aren’t without their risks (EPA notes that incorrect application of DEET can cause skin irritation, dizziness, disorientation, and in extreme cases, seizures or death), but when it comes to insect-borne diseases, we really shouldn’t mess around.

High concentrations of DEET aren’t better - you want to look for 30% DEET (and not more) - this should last you about 10 hours, and is considered safe for children under 3.

If you’re not in a high-risk area and don’t want to use DEET-based products, look for products made with:

🦟Picaridin - 20% (not more)
🦟IR3535 - 20% (not more)
🦟30-40% Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (OLE) (this is not the same thing as essential oil of lemon eucalyptus, which isn’t very effective)

Swipe for more details!

Protect yourself and your loved ones this summer with the right repellent for your needs.

Stay safe and enjoy the sunshine! 🌼

July is UV safety awareness month - so let’s talk about how to enjoy the sun safely!

Skin cancer kills nearly 60,000 people annually, & according to the IARC, 1.5+ million new cases of skin cancer were estimated in 2022.

AND, skin cancer is one of THE most preventable cancers, which is why it’s a good idea to understand the ins and outs of sun safety!

Let’s get into it!

UV rays are a form of ionizing radiation that can damage cells - the 2 types of UV rays we are most commonly exposed to are UVA and UVB. Both are damaging in different ways:

☀UVA rays (think A for Ageing) pe*****te deep into the skin and contribute to premature aging wrinkles, and some skin cancers.

☀UVB rays (think B for Burn) are responsible for sunburns, and most skin cancers.
While it’s true that sun exposure is great for our health, it’s also true that too much can harm us.

Your best sun protection strategies include:
⛱Shade
👕Hats & clothing. This is the “low-tox” way to protect yourself - no sunscreen needed

Sunscreens:
🧴When choosing sunscreen, look for ones that offer broad-spectrum protection against both UVB and UVA rays.
🧴Any sunscreen is better than no sunscreen, but the best option, as it pertains to ingredient safety, is to avoid chemical sunscreen ingredients like oxybenzone & octinoxate, or any that have added fragrances.
🧴Better options are sunscreens that rely on zinc oxide, or Tinosorb and Mexoryl, two chemical sunscreen ingredients with a great safety record.

Remember, the goal is to reduce exposure and protect your skin over the long run. Are you ready to enjoy the sun safely and responsibly?

As you likely know, there is no safe level of exposure to lead—any amount can have harmful effects. This is why knowing where lead exposure is likely to happen is important!

First, the basics: lead is a heavy metal that has toxic effects on EVERY organ system.

It is highly persistent in the environment: because it’s an element, it doesn’t break down and can build up in soils, and inside our bodies.

In fact, lead builds up in our bones, and can be released both during pregnancy, and as we age.

While lead can be harmful at any age, exposure during fetal development and childhood is the most damaging and can lead to brain and nervous system damage, as well as lowered IQ, behavioral issues, and increased antisocial behavior.

In adults, long-term exposure risks include high blood pressure and kidney disease.

Outside of occupational exposures, here are some of the key places where we get exposed to lead:

📌lead-based paint & dust
📌tap water
📌pottery, especially imported and vintage
📌contaminated soil, especially near older buildings or urban/industrial areas

Minimizing exposure is key!

👉test for lead if you’re in an older home or planning to renovate
👉use water filters certified to remove lead
👉avoid using imported/vintage pottery for serving food
👉don’t let children play in soil too close to an old home, or in an urban industrial area

You can also increase the intake of iron, calcium, and vitamin C-rich foods to help decrease lead absorption - food-based sources are superior to supplementation here!

It’s not possible to eliminate ALL lead exposure, but by taking a few proactive steps, we can significantly reduce our risks of harm from this toxic metal.

Which of these things are you already doing? What questions do you have about lead? Comment below!
