The White House recently directed the termination of thousands of grants from federal agencies that serve the history field, including the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), Institute for Museum and Library Servies (IMLS), and National Park Service (NPS). This sudden, widespread loss of funding is rapidly creating a crisis for America's history community. We are asking history organizations that have received cancellation letters and emails from NEH, IMLS, and/or NPS to send copies of these notices to AASLH by filling out our survey. In 1714, Captain George Winter of the Mary transhipped a cargo of 111 enslaved persons who had been purchased in Barbados to York River, Virginia, where enslaved labour was used to facilitate extensive to***co cultivation. In the same year, Captain Robert Benn of the Charles transhipped a cargo of 177 enslaved persons who had been purchased in Jamaica to Cartagena to satisfy labour demands in the Spanish Americas.[1] These voyages are examples of the intra-American slave trade. Between 1660 and 1730, the intra-colonial slave trade to North America was dominated by Barbados and Jamaica, while the inter-imperial slave trade to Spanish America operated largely out of Curaçao and Jamaica and was characterised by a series of asiento contracts.[2]

The transatlantic slave trade is largely responsible for bringing to the Americas enslaved Africans. The slave trade is said to have drawn between ten and twenty million Africans from their homeland, with approximately six hundred thousand coming to Jamaica (one of the largest importer of slaves at the time) between 1533 and 1807.

Referred to as the triangular trade, it involved three points, Europe, Africa and the West Indies and represented a complex financial business at its peak in the 18th century. The cruel and inhumane conditions experienced by the Africans from their initial capture, their journey along the middle passage and enslavement in the West Indies demanded that the slave trade be abolished and slaves be freed.
