In BQ11 โ€ข We look at the relationship between โ€ข Emotions and Rationality โ€ข To make rational decisions, we have to understand our and not ignore them. It's usually better to postpone making important decisions (if possible) when in an emotional state - however, the emotions experienced are not necessarily irrational. Emotions highlight other processes that need our attention, they help us prioritize what matters, and safeguard our boundaries, and help us in relating to one another.... We take a closer look at our behind this complicated relationship!

In BQ11 โ€ข We often see portrayed as a state void of emotions, with the individual making great decisions and succeeding - but that is mostly fiction! Emotions are great tools, and we need them to make more rational decisions. Clearly, it is not a good thing to make big decisions when in an emotional state, however, the trick is to sit with those emotions to understand the message they are sending. And then, make a move taking the message into consideration.
Our are also where our blind spots hide (& we all have them) so, getting to know our emotions, emotional weaknesses, traumas, soft spots - is crucial in helping reduce irrational responses. It is more about understanding the role emotions play in how we make decisions, than it is about controlling or ignoring our emotions.

We take a closer look at the devastating psychological impact of โ€ข SHAME โ€ข although an emotion we all experience at some point in life, experienced long term and internalized can be a silent killer. Experiences of long term humiliation, objectification, dehumanization, and abuse (Including bullying, and also "corporal punishment" which is just another name for the act of "hitting a child"), in other words - experiences that induce repeated feelings of shame have a lasting negative impact on an individual's and increase the likelihood of depression, anxiety, self-harm, impulsivity, mood instability, difficulties with interpersonal relationships, and more...

IN BQ10 โ€ข We look at โ€ข The Paradox of Choice โ€ข What does this really mean? Basically, it's the idea that too many choices can, contrary to what one might think, create more anxiety and less joy for us. The abundance of choice, meant to make things better, can turn full circle and create more for us. But why? well - the availability of too many choices also creates many hypothetical outcomes, and even more possibilities... this, in turn, creates an ever elongated decision making period, beyond what is necessary or productive. If you've spent 4 months shopping online for a chair because too many to choose from, you might relate! ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿพโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ™‹โ€โ™‚๏ธ

Additionally, when there are many other options our tends to imagine hypothetical scenarios and other outcomes, and missed opportunities. So, when we make a choice while other choices were also available, our imagination of what those other outcomes could have been impacts our level of satisfaction with the choices made! ๐Ÿค”

In BQ10 โ€ข We shine the spotlight on the spirit of โ€ข because when things get tough this city always pulls together! Our Senior Correspondent, Dominique McGhee, has a chat with James Beard Award winning Chef Chris Shepherd โ€ข Owner of Georgia James and One Fifth โ€ข and a defining voice in Houston's culinary scene.

Chef Chris talks about the challenges faced by the industry this past year! Through it all, Chef Shepherd has helped his team survive, and has focused on giving back to his community through his crisis relief organization Southern Smoke - and giving millions to those in need within the industry.

Chef Shepherd has also joined forces with Chef Chris Williams Owner of Lucille's to create pop ups to benefit bartenders experiencing hardship through the covid shut downs.

Chef Chris Williams who is a rising Houston star, has been focused on feeding Houston's most vulnerable population, the elderly! His non profit Lucille's 1913 has, to date, delivered 200,000 meals directly to Houstonians experiencing food insecurity.

Houston has faced some difficult challenges in recent years, but this community always pulls together, and no better way to do it than with food!

In BQ10 | Understanding โ€ข THE OF A CON โ€ข Some of us think that we cannot be conned, but that is not true. A con artist looks for emotional vulnerabilities, and being conned is more about emotions than intelligence. As human beings we all have moments of emotional rawness, we are all psychologically biased towards our passions, and are often oblivious to our own blind spots. We have moments of loss, or even of triumph, and a con artist preys on those vulnerabilities and emotional triggers. A con artist adjusts the con to fit the target. And, at different rates, and at different times... we can all fall prey to a con! Even a con that may seem ridiculous in hindsight. ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿฝโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿฟโ€โ™‚๏ธ
