When it comes to getting a pet, you’ve probably heard the moto “adopt don’t shop.” There are several reasons adoption is better than picking out your dog or cat from a pet store, mainly being these little guys won’t have a home otherwise.

Some people might feel like rescues limit your choices when it comes to getting a pet, but that’s simply not true! Between the SD Humane Society, TAP, and breed specific rescues, there are dozens of options for you when it comes to finding the perfect pet in San Diego.

When it comes to cybercrime, prevention is key. Once your data is taken, it can easily be copied and placed in hundreds of databases in minutes, and it’s exceedingly difficult to remove that information (although not impossible, more on that in a second). So, the best thing to do is to recognize threats before you fall victim to them or to avoid threats from coming to you all together.

According to experts there are two things to consider when snacking, portion and nutrient quality. Which might sound obvious, but if you snack while working, you might be participating in what’s known as “mindless snacking.” There is also a chance that you’re eating as an emotional response. Stress, anger, and boredom can all make someone turn to food. It’s important to look at what’s motivating you to eat, what you’re doing when you’re eating, and obviously what you’re putting in front of yourself.

As SDPEBA members, when you retire (or if you’re already retired) you can sign up for Sharp’s Medicare Advantage plan at a group rate, a part C Medicare option for San Diegans. And I’m not sure about you, but everywhere I go I see billboards for non-group versions of Sharp Medicare Advantage, and they are frequently advertising that members get free gym memberships, but is that true and do SDPEBA members get it?

Many women wear several hats on any given day. They may be a mother, partner, wife, daughter, sister, pet parent, friend, volunteer, employee — the list goes on and on. While many of these women may report they are busy, happy and fulfilled, they are equally likely to say they're exhausted much of the time.

“Sleep is vital because it allows our bodies and brains to rest, repair and recharge.” says Dr. Ari Laliotis , a board-certified internal medicine and sleep medicine doctor with Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group. “Healthy sleep is a key pillar of a robust immune system and has been shown to play a role in both improving antibody responses to vaccinations and reducing susceptibility to infectious illnesses.”

Within San Diego there are many notable Black activists and important icons who influenced American culture, politics, and the labor movement. One such entrepreneur turned advocate was Howard “Skippy” Smith. If the name doesn’t sound familiar, that’s not surprising. Smith was not a politician or an orator, he was a business owner who pushed for progress by just doing what he thought was right.

What is Long-Term Care? Long-term care refers to the type of care you need when you can no longer perform routine activities that most people don’t give a second thought. Think bathing, dressing, getting out of bed, or eating. This kind of care is usually given to people who suffer from injuries, illness or old age. This sort of care becomes “Long-Term” when it passes 90 days, which is usually the cutoff for Medicare and other similar insurance coverage.

What is “Financial Wellness?”
Financial wellness is equal parts mindset and practice, and it basically equates to the steps you take to make sure you’re constantly in a comfortable state with your finances.
While you can find many guides and plans online that outline how to achieve financial wellness, they are often very bland and generalized because everyone’s situation is different and wellness is a vague term that might be different for you. That being said, there are several key tenants to financial wellness that you can use to guide yourself to defining financial wellness and eventually achieving it!

August is finally here! Which means, kids (and maybe you) are heading back to school, and that means school supplies. This could be pens and paper, it could be textbooks, or it could be a laptop or software like Microsoft Word. These can be quite expensive, and their prices add up really quick, but luckily SDPEBA members can use Purchasing Power to help manage their budget.

Spray or lotion Sunscreen: What's best?
Spray sunscreen
The best sunscreen to use varies by individual preference. “Spray-on sunscreen is easy to apply and dries quickly,” says Dr. Mona Mofid, a board-certified dermatologist affiliated with Sharp Grossmont Hospital. “It is also useful for hard-to-reach areas, such as the back and shoulders, and areas often missed, such as the back of legs and feet.”

Spray sunscreen is lightweight and often nongreasy — a great option for people who don’t like to use lotion sunscreen because of the way it feels on their skin. “Most importantly, spray-on is convenient to reapply more frequently,” says Dr. Mofid.

Does Medicare cover dental care? The answer is usually no. Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B do not cover dental. Some Medicare Advantage plans do offer dental coverage, but they are usually more expensive to compensate.

As a note, the Sharp Medicare Advantage plan offered by SDPEBA does not cover normal dental procedures. We offer retirees dental through MetLife. There is a dental component to Sharp Medicare Advantage, but it is only for dental procedures that have to do with accidents or injuries.

Lately multiple people have said this to me: “you know my dentist said flossing is actually more important than brushing your teeth.” Usually they’re saying this to say they don’t actually need to brush, but that made me start to wonder… is that actually true?

As a regular flosser and 2-3 times a day tooth brusher, I figure my own thoughts and opinions on this are probably not going to be great. So I did some research and put together a quick guide for you on all things flossing.
