It’s been a busy few weeks for Almost Family San Diego!

The team recently attended the Race For Autism put on by the National Foundation for Autism Research where our director Blake Sheldon finished in the top 10!

This past weekend the team attended the Leading the Charge conference, hosted by the Developmental Disabilities Provider Network, San Diego. At the conference our team got to hear the amazing panel speakers, each sharing their unique stories and experiences.

Following the conference, the team met with members of the Autism Society San Diego at Petco Park for Autism Acceptance night.

We are grateful to be involved in such an amazing community here in San Diego!

Autism Society San Diego held their Autism Social & Mental Health conference today at the beautiful Sharp Prebys Innovation and Education Center. Individuals, families, and providers had an opportunity to come together and learn about how we can better support those with autism and make services/supports more accessible.

A large topic amongst families today was Self Determination Services. Some were actively using it and loving it, others had never heard of it. Many had questions about where to begin, what the process will look like, and why they should consider it over traditional services.

The Self Determination Program provides more flexibility and autonomy over what services and how much of those services you want to engage in, based on your individual needs. Many utilize it for access to recreational services, respite services, non medical transportation, employment services, skilled nursing and behavioral intervention services, and so much more. SDRC and your team will help you plan for what that support looks like for you.

We’ve attached SDRC’s quick glance guide of what the steps of transitioning from traditional services to SDP services look like. If you feel like you’re ready to explore the SDP make sure to connect with your Service Coordinator to see if it’s the right option for you.
