Raj arrived at Egoscue in his early 80s, running out of hope that his aging and ailing body could be helped. He had become increasingly unstable over the last several years and was constantly in fear of falling. His stride had shortened to a shuffle, making even short bouts of movement exhausting. And he had spent years unsuccessfully hunting for a cure for his back pain. He walked into Egoscue feeling like he had nothing left to lose. Fast forward just two months, and Raj had grown 2+." Standing taller and more upright, he felt less unsteady, confident that he could walk up or down stairs without falling. Within six months, he went from struggling to walk just a hundred yards to two-mile strolls around his neighborhood without any discomfort. His stride lengthened back out and his energy levels returned. Now back-pain free he continues to do Egoscue daily because it gives him a freedom and excitement about life that he once feared he had lost forever.

Posture Awareness Tip (see video): Unlike most mammals, we are designed to stand and move about the world on two feet. Our body’s blueprint makes this vertical stance efficient and stable. As our head moves forward of our shoulders and our shoulders move forward of our hips, the amount of work our body must do to stay upright against gravity increases. This decreases our inherent stability and increases the chance of falls. It also creates unnecessary stress and strain on our muscles and joints, increasing the likelihood of pain and injury. And it decreases the efficiency of movement, meaning we expand more energy than necessary and fatigue sooner. It can be easy to associate these things with aging but restoring balanced posture is often all that is needed to make movement pain-free and joyful again.

David built a career he loved, molding copper into beautiful pieces of art but he was increasingly struggling with soreness and fatigue from the manual work. In addition, he developed sciatica, a type of nerve pain that was radiating down his entire left leg and preventing him from completing even short walks without debilitating discomfort. He arrived at Egoscue aware that most of his weight was resting along the inside of his left foot, but he hadn’t noticed how wide his feet were when standing, nor the collapse of his left ankle internally (known as pronation) that was contributing to his imbalanced weight distribution. David admits he was initially skeptical when his exercises targeted imbalances in his shoulders and upper back but sure enough, he noticed his stance narrowing and the weight becoming more evenly distributed in his feet.

As his body became more balanced, David found relief from his sciatica for the first time in months. He is now back hiking 12+ miles pain free. David also once again feels like his body tolerates the physical demands of his job with ease, a feeling he had all but given up on and waved off as a sign of aging before finding Egoscue.

Posture Awareness Tip: When our body is in proper alignment, our muscles work together efficiently and evenly. An easy way to gauge our alignment is to assess the weight distribution in our feet. It should be even from left to right, with a balanced distribution of pressure across the bottom of each foot. Even small changes in the ankles and legs can have ripple effects throughout the entire body, just as imbalances in our shoulders and upper body can impact the weight distribution in our feet. These muscle imbalances impair our ability to distribute mechanical stress evenly, increasing the risk of acute injuries and chronic overuse injuries. Restoring muscle balance with targeted daily exercises provides a solid foundation for physical activity, making movements safer and more stable.

Kevin is a firefighter and avid runner, accustomed to living an active life and feeling good despite the high demand he placed on his body. At least until he developed a nagging tightness in his hips that he couldn’t eliminate. Kevin felt like he had a good understanding of what was going on with his body but when he arrived at Egoscue, he could see the imbalances in his posture right away. His torso and shoulders were shifted and dropped to his right, changing the balance of his upper body and consequently limiting the movement of his hips. As he integrated his Egoscue exercises into his daily routine, he saw immediate improvements, noting that his upper body felt more stacked above his lower body, creating a stability he hadn’t even realized he was missing. As his alignment improved, mobility returned to his hips and the tightness he couldn’t shake disappeared. Kevin credits his improved posture for helping him feel and move better than he ever has. With no other changes to his training, his run times have dropped, and he feels stronger despite the quicker pace.

Posture Awareness Tip: Our musculoskeletal system is designed to be symmetric from side to side, meaning the muscles, bones, and joints on the right side of our body should be a mirror image of the left side. Asymmetries from side-to-side place extra stress and strain on our body – increasing wear and tear, restricting mobility, and decreasing our ability to generate and absorb force efficiently. Egoscue exercises reduce these asymmetries by restoring balanced muscle strength and flexibility, improving posture, and creating a strong foundation for feeling and moving at our very best.

Tammy is a stay-at-home mom of 5 kids. She led a very active life chasing around her little ones until she was sidelined with back pain in 2023. Tammy was diagnosed with a herniated disc in her thoracic spine and told surgery was her only option. She turned to Egoscue instead.

As her posture improved and the curve of her thoracic spine started to straighten back out, her back pain diminished. She also noticed her sleep improving and was able to lie flat comfortably, a feat she couldn't achieve before starting Egsocue.

Tammy committed to improving her posture to avoid surgery, but she now credits the decision with helping her restore her body to a more natural and healthy state, allowing her to reclaim her active life.

An added bonus - Tammy had lymphedema (swelling) in her right arm for over five years, following chemotherapy for breast cancer. As her posture improved, so did the swelling.

Posture Awareness Tip: Kyphosis or rounding of the upper back gives a hunched over appearance to our upper body. It can result from weak spinal muscles and habitual slouching while sitting. As the spine rounds forward, the shoulders and head follow. Excessive thoracic curve can lead to back pain and stiffness, herniated discs, compressed lungs and difficulty breathing, limited mobility of the shoulder joint, neck pain, and compromised sleep. Egoscue therapy retrains and strengthens your muscles to improve your posture and alleviate (and prevent) these symptoms.

A Purple Heart, Pioneering Pain Relief

The Egoscue Method is the result of one person’s extensive search for an answer to debilitating chronic pain

The Egoscue Method was created by Pete Egoscue through his efforts to find solutions for his own chronic pain. His story is familiar to anyone who has suffered without being able to find relief, and the solutions he discovered on his journey can help you be pain-free for life and live the life you want!

More than four decades ago, Pete Egoscue returned from Vietnam with a Purple Heart and ongoing nerve pain due to wounds suffered in battle. Like many of us, Pete was conditioned to rely on medical experts, but they focused on his symptoms and were unable to help him. So Pete began his search for a way to live pain-free, finding the true cause of his symptoms—his posture and balance.
