February is about love and the heart ❤️ right? What better month to discuss the thoracic spine. This "mid back" area anchors your rib cage which protects your heart! Made up of 12 vertebrae, your thoracic spine provides stability to your neck and lower back. It sits between your cervical spine and lumbar spine and aides in rotation, flexion, extension and lateral flexion (side bending).

It is also one of the very common areas of MIS-alignments that we see.

Because we are often sitting, looking down at a cell phone, or slouching forward at a desk...the upper back can become very rounded. This can cause headaches, difficulty breathing, vertigo, lower back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain...and so many other pains. If left unaddressed, other areas must continue to compensate for it, creating further pain and dysfunction in your body.

How heavy is your head? Depending on the degree of the angle, our head can weigh anywhere form 10 pounds to 60 POUNDS. This is a large amount of pressure to put on the cervical spine when it already has an important job of holding the head vertically. The farther your head is out in front of the body, the more pressure there is on the spinal cord and surrounding structures; think upper back and shoulders.

Load Bearing Joints Series: it's all connected...
We look at your WHOLE body in every appointment with you snd study your alignment from front to back, left to right. In continuing to break down an Egoscue posture assessment, FEET & ANKLES are up for discussion today!

Things we look for:
-dorsiflexion and plantar flexion, ie pointing or flexing the feet. If you tend to bend your knees often when standing, your ankles are in more of a dorsiflexed position, even more so if you tend to lean forward
-inverted feet: ie pigeon toed
-everted feet: ie feet turn out like a duck
-pronation: feet that roll inward upon standing or landing when walking. Often coupled with ankles collapsing inward
-supination: feet that roll to the outer edges when bearing weight standing or when walking

All of the above affect your movement and the way your body compensates to make up for these misalignments.
Other considerations: incorrect foot or/and ankle position can be the cause of hip pain, knee pain, foot pain, etc. Because the body has to compensate to move, other bones and muscles are recruited to complete the work which can often lead to dysfunction and pain in the long run.

The Egoscue Method was born in 1971 through my own search for answers to my chronic musculoskeletal pain.

My story is familiar to anyone who has suffered without relief, and the solutions I discovered have helped thousands of people to live pain free and get back to doing what they love!

All of us at Egoscue deeply appreciate your commitment to The Method.  I could not have imagined fifty years ago, that my one man show would grow to include 31 clinics and thousands of certified postural alignment specialists around the world.

Load Bearing Joints Series: it's all connected...
In every appointment you do with us, we look at your WHOLE body and your alignment front to back, left to right. In breaking down an Egoscue posture assessment, KNEES are up for discussion today!

Things we look for:
-varus stress or bow legged
-valgus stress or knock knees
-1 or both kneecaps that turn inward or outward. This means your femur bone on the internal or externally rotated kneecap, is not sitting properly in its hip socket.
All of the above affect your movement and the way your body compensates to make up for these misalignments.
Other considerations: incorrect knee position can be the cause hip pain, ankle pain, foot pain, etc. Because the body has to compensate to move, other bones and muscles are recruited to complete the work. Over time this can lead to dysfunction, pain, and injury.

It really is about the basics. Proper alignment is the center of our health and well being. If you're misaligned, you can't function at your best. Align your body 1st and then take care of all the other important factors.... Fitness, nutrition, mental health, sleep, etc.

In every appointment you do with us, we look at your WHOLE body and your alignment front to back, left to right. In breaking down an Egoscue posture assessment, HIPS are a big piece of that puzzle.

Things we look for
-elevation: one hip higher than the other
-rotation: one hip coming more forward than the other
-Pelvic disparity right to left: one side of the pelvis tilts more anterior or posterior than the other. Or one of each.
-Overly anterior or posterior pelvic tilt

Do you have any of these? Look in the mirror!
Can you imagine how any one of these can hinder you every day? Hips and opposite shoulders have a direct relationship so consider that for a moment.

Things we look for
-elevation: one shoulder higher than the other
-rotation: one shoulder coming more forward than the other
-protraction: shoulders rounding forward and/or shoulder blades "winging" off the back
-scapular disparity: uneven shoulder blades

Do you have any of these? Look in the mirror!
Can you imagine how any of these can hinder you ever day? Shoulders and opposite hips have a direct relationship so consider that for a moment.

Shoulder pain? If your shoulders are uneven, shoulders cannot FUNCTION equally, therefore one has to do alot more work than the other, resulting in?? You guessed it, more wear in a misaligned state = pain, injury, inability to use it.

If you play a rotational sport like baseball, golf, any raquet or stick sport that is 1 hand dominant...you probably have rotation in your shoulders that in turn affects your hip(s)

Remember this is just a small piece of the puzzle even if all your pain exists only in your shoulders.

Here you are! BUT, while these joints are very important players, we also look at head position, foot position, spinal curvature (or lack thereof), pelvic tilt etc. We will break down each of these joints in flowing posts. Stay tuned!
