JUST RELEASED: CCUIH’s Statement on the “One Big Beautiful Bill”

The California Consortium for Urban Indian Health (CCUIH), alongside Urban Indian Organizations (UIOs), is raising serious concerns about the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” which threatens to strip healthcare access from over 1 million Californians—disproportionately harming Urban Indian communities.

Urban Indian Health Organizations rely on Medi-Cal funding to deliver essential services like diabetes care, mental health support, and traditional healing. We urge lawmakers to protect this critical safety net and uphold their obligations to Native communities.

Last week, CCUIH hosted our first-ever Traditional Indian Healing Summit—a powerful day of community, conversation, and cultural care.

Our Executive Director, Virginia Hedrick, opened with reflections on California’s 1115 Medicaid Waiver and its impact on Urban Indian health. We heard from Esther Lucero and Layla Yamabe () on the strength of traditional healing, and from Michael Duran (), Sage LaPena (), and Anthony Guzman () on how these practices are woven into clinical care.

Wahpepah’s Kitchen nourished us with a traditional lunch, reminding us that food is medicine.

Sonya Tetnowski () shared about her advocacy on the VA Tribal Advisory Committee and the Not Invisible Act, emphasizing the importance of ensuring Native voices shape federal policy.

We ended with Sage LaPena leading a session on Indigenous plant knowledge and how it can be meaningfully integrated into Western care.

Thank you to all our speakers, attendees, The California Endowment, and Wehapeh’s Kitchen. We look forward to keeping this conversation going.

Culturally rooted mental health care saves lives—don’t let California cut it.

Governor’s May revisions to the state budget for FY 2025–2026 propose to completely cut the final year of funding for the California Reducing Disparities Project (CRDP)—a program that funds community-led, culturally grounded mental health services for Native, Black, Latinx, Asian, Pacific Islander, and LGBTQ+ communities.

We urge you to oppose this cut and restore this critical funding.
