Take the time to speak to a professional to fully understand how to safely take prescription medication. There are always risks to taking medications. According to the CDC, in addition to the serious risks of addiction, abuse, and overdose, the use of prescription opioids can have a number of side effects, even when taken as directed:
- Toleranceโ€”meaning you might need to take more of the medication for the same pain relief
- Physical dependenceโ€”meaning you have symptoms of withdrawal when the medication is stopped
- Increased sensitivity to pain
- Constipation
- Nausea, vomiting, and dry mouth
- Sleepiness and dizziness
- Confusion
- Depression
- Low levels of testosterone that can result in lower s*x drive, energy, and strength
- Itching and sweating

The cost of prescription drug misuse is astounding yet there are many, many reasons why someone would, knowingly or unknowingly, misuse medical treatment that is approved for patient consumption. It is our responsibility and our government's responsibility to care for each other.

A recent study found that general medical providers (primary care doctors) have a knowledge gap when it comes to prescription opioids and need to be more educated about opioids for pain and addiction potential.

Because primary care doctors donโ€™t have strong foundational knowledge, they have low confidence to set up a treatment plan. This leads to plans that focus on treating pain while lacking strong safeguards from addiction.

People typically trust their primary care doctor (and they should) but when it comes to issues of addiction treatment or pain management it's best if you speak to a doctor that is an expert in pain management.

Participants were asked to rate their confidence in their ability to employ patient-engagement techniques into pain management (Program 1) or develop a treatment plan for a patient with chronic pain (Program 2). In Program 1, nearly one-half (48%) reported no or slight confidence (Figure 8). In Program 2, nearly three-quarters (73%) reported no or slight confidence.

Often, when a challenge becomes so overwhelming we become numb and turn our head the other way because it's so large we don't know how to being. The increased use of fentanyl has dramatically increased the opioid-related death rate in the streets of the Bay Area.

The first step is to ask for help. Substance use disorder is treatable with Medication Assisted Treatment. Find out if treatment is right for you. ๐Ÿ“ž (925) 922-5388

We can all do our part to save a life and stop the growing opioid epidemic. Here are three ways you can help stop drug overdose:
1) Take action! Start by calling 911 to report a medical emergency.

2) Carry Naloxone/Narcan, the nasal spray that stops drug overdose in its tracks. This spray is available without a prescription at your local pharmacy (CVS, Rite-Aid, Walgreens, Walmart and others) and is usually covered by insurance, otherwise, or you may need to pay a small co-pay ($20 or less).

3) Train yourself and learn how to administer Naloxone/Narcan in case someone is experiencing a drug overdose.

First, check if the person is breathing. If theyโ€™re not breathing, perform rescue (CPR) breathing before administering the Naloxone/Narcan.

Open the Naloxone nasal spray. Follow assembly instructions on your specific product to ensure proper use; there should be a guide included.

Spray into the nose. Tilt the head back and spray the Naloxone/Narcan into both nostrils. Use half for one nostril and half for the other.

Continue rescue (CPR) breathing. The nasal spray of Naloxone/Narcan can take up to 5 minutes to take effect. Continue rescue (CPR) breathing while waiting for the Naloxone/Narcan to take effect.

If necessary, administer another dose. If the individual does not revive from one dose, give them another dose after 3-5 minutes. Stronger opioids, such as fentanyl, may require multiple doses of Naloxone/Narcan.

Togther we can do our part to stop accidental overdoses now. But remember, substance use disorder is treatable with Medication Assisted Treatment, counseling, and a lot of love and compassion from friends, family, and a strong community.

Good morning! Hope you woke up feeling thankful. If you didn't, take a moment to think of one thing you're grateful for. ๐Ÿ’› Here are some ideas for you to get up and move, walk, dance this weekend. If you're feeling more introspective, slow down with some meditation and savor every sip of your favorite tea or coffee.

It's Friday! ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ We are ready to enjoy this weekend with friends and family. However, at a time when accidental drug overdoses are happening much too frequently, we want to take the time to remind people with substance use disorder to be more aware and cautious. Most Fentanyl overdoses happen without the knowledge of what you are taking.

We know substance use disorder is difficult, near impossible, to control without Medication Assisted Treatment. We strongly encourage people with substance use disorder to take precautions, similar to having a designated driver, to prevent accidental overdose deaths.
