When is the best time to book a 3D/4D ultrasound?
These three images are a great example of how timing can influence what we see.
Image 1:
Around 28–30 weeks, we’re often able to capture beautiful full-face images like this one. At this stage babies usually still have enough space and amniotic fluid around the face, which helps create clear 3D ultrasound images 🥰
Image 2:
As pregnancy moves beyond 30 weeks (this image was taken just before 32 weeks), it becomes more common to see structures in front of baby’s face - things like hands, feet, the placenta, or the uterine wall. When this happens, parts of the face can be partially hidden, like we see here 🫣
👀 Can anyone guess what we’re seeing in front of baby’s face in this image?
Image 3:
And then sometimes… even later in the third trimester (this image was taken at 35 weeks) we get lucky and can still get a clear look! We’re seeing a bit of the uterine wall in front of baby’s forehead but are still able to see those sweet facial features 🩷
Every pregnancy is different. Image clarity depends on several factors including:
• Baby’s position
• Amniotic fluid levels around the face
• Placenta location
• Whether baby has hands, feet, or the cord near their face
Because of these variables, the best time to schedule a full 3D/4D session is usually around 28–30 weeks when we have the highest chance of seeing baby’s full face clearly.
That said - if you’re past that window, it’s still absolutely worth trying! Many families still get wonderful images later in pregnancy… we just like to set expectations that visibility can be a little more unpredictable 🤍
