It's time to set the record straight. The following are some common misconceptions about therapy, as well as the ✨truth✨ behind them.

1️⃣ All therapists are the same: Therapists come from a variety of backgrounds, and they have different training, approaches, and styles. It's important to find one who is compatible with you and your needs.

2️⃣ Therapy takes a long time: The length of therapy will vary depending on the individual and the issues being addressed. Some people may only need a few sessions, while others may benefit from longer-term therapy. It's important to talk with your therapist about how long your treatment should last.

3️⃣ Therapy is too expensive: Therapy can be expensive, but there are many resources available to help make therapy more affordable. Many insurance plans cover therapy, and clinics and community organizations may offer reduced fee options.

4️⃣ Therapy is only for people with serious mental health issues: Therapy can be a useful tool for addressing a wide range of challenges, including stress, anxiety, relationship issues, and more.

Let us know which misconceptions you hear as a therapist 👇🏽

Finding the right therapist can take some time and effort, but it can be a very rewarding process. Here are some steps you can take to find the right therapist for you:

✏️ Identify your needs: What do you hope to achieve through therapy? Do you have specific issues you want to work on, or do you just need someone to talk to? Having a clear idea of your goals will help you find a therapist who is well-suited to meet your needs.

✏️ Do your research: Look for therapists who have experience and training in the areas you are interested in. You can also check with your insurance provider to see what therapists are covered under your plan.

✏️ Look for recommendations: Ask friends, family, or your primary care doctor for recommendations. You can also check with local mental health organizations or professional associations.

✏️ Consider the therapist's style: Different therapists have different styles and approaches. Some may be more directive, while others are more collaborative. Think about what style you might prefer and look for a therapist who matches that.

✏️ Schedule a consultation: Many therapists offer a free initial consultation or a reduced rate for the first session. This is a good opportunity to get a feel for the therapist's style and personality and to determine if you feel comfortable working with them.

✏️ Trust your instincts: Trust your own feelings and instincts. If you don't feel comfortable with a therapist, it's okay to look for someone else. The therapeutic relationship is an important part of the healing process, so it's important to find someone you feel comfortable with.

Therapy homework is not busy work. It is designed to help patients maximize the value of therapy, and implement the strategies learned from sessions into every day life.

At Teru we understand this, which is why we have designed a therapy support app 📲 that makes it easier for patients to complete assignments between sessions AND provides valuable metrics for therapists.

Studies show that homework completion leads to shortened treatment times, which means overall reduced costs related to treatment and less time dedicated to the therapy process in the long run. And make no mistake, good therapists want to shorten their patients treatment time.

Teru was born from the idea of three founders who wanted to improve therapeutic engagement for both the client and the therapist. Keep reading to learn more about them! 👇

✨ Saulo Vallory is our co-founder, CTO, and CEO who has his own mental health journey. As a patient, he was surprised to see that the homework his therapist provided was paper-based and as someone struggling with depression, it felt overwhelming to have yet another thing to keep track of.

✨ Ariadne Nunes is our co-founder and a specialist in CBT, Schema Therapy, Positive Psychology, and DBT for teenagers. She is extremely passionate about helping adolescents, and has observed that the technology that this generation is accustomed to, has been lacking in her industry. She is passionate about building Teru to bridge the gap between sessions for her patients.

✨ Michelli Simpson is our co-founder and Board Certified Therapist, fully licensed in the State of Arizona, Florida, Washington, and the UK. Her work is focused on social justice and provides services around anti-racist work and mental health for minorities. Born and raised in an impoverish area in São Paulo, Brazil, she saw the the negative effects of mental health at an early age. As a therapist, she sees a true need for better training and tools for therapists that is not just another app but rather a needed tool that makes therapy more equitable, and more effective.

Please give us a follow and feel free to introduce yourself to us in the comments or our messages. We couldn’t do any of this without you! 💗
