Most mornings I’m in New Orleans, I go to Baldwin and Company for my coffee & inspiration.
Tonight I attended a book signing of DeMaurice Smith’s ‘Turf Wars: The Fight for the Soul of America’s Game’. DeMaurice Smith is the former executive director of the NFL Players Assn.

Amongst the incredible storytelling he shared, here are a couple of tidbits I wrote down:
✨His inspiration from James Baldwin to embody ‘intelligent & eloquent rage’
✨ ‘A union (workers, players) is formed from the aggrieved

Bayou Barkada – Shell Beach, St. Bernard Parish
In partnership with , this site centers Filipinx ancestral healing and land-based gathering along Louisiana’s fragile coast. Shell Beach sits on the frontlines of erosion, storm surge, and disappearing wetlands. We are seeking proposals that honor migration stories, water memory, and cultural resilience while responding to coastal vulnerability and land loss.

Pontchartrain Stables – New Orleans East
Rooted in Black equestrian culture and youth programming, .stables is both a healing space and a vital community anchor. The site faces urban heat, infrastructure disinvestment, and flooding. Proposals should explore shade structures, water access, flood resilient gathering space, and regenerative design that strengthens both horses and community.

Bayou Bienvenue Climate Gateway – 2101 Paris Road, New Orleans
In Partnership with Located at the edge of a restoring cypress swamp, this kayak launch welcomes more than 10,000 visitors annually into a landscape once lost to saltwater intrusion. The site lacks municipal water and faces brackish conditions—making it a powerful opportunity to demonstrate rainwater harvesting, solar microgrids, decentralized infrastructure, and visible climate adaptation in action.

x – Central City, New Orleans
This collaboration connects Super Sunday as a living cultural tradition with circular design and material reuse. As waste streams and resource scarcity accelerates, this site invites proposals that transform discarded materials into meaningful public art—honoring Indigenous masking traditions while modeling regenerative fabrication and community-based climate solutions.

How to Submit a Public Art Proposal

• Join the Idea Labs on April 2 (1725 Baronne)
• Proposals open April 3
• Deadline: April 13. Prototype selections April 20.
• Exhibition: May 21

12 years ago today, March 28, 2014, we were in New Orleans. Markus wanted to check out a recommended seafood restaurant. We walked into Peche and was told the wait for a table for 3 was 45-min. But if we were ok with it, they had 3 seats at the bar.

Myles just turned 4 years old. He sat at the bar between me & Markus, ordered a cold glass of milk, and we all had a great time.

Though youth can no longer sit at bars, don’t let anyone tell you New Orleans isn’t family friendly.

If you’re in a family that values intergenerational cultural sharing and transmission, come on!

Also, make your reservations at Peche Seafood! James Beard recognized Chef and the wonderful staff there will treat y’all real good. Tell them that the Bayou Barkada sent you.

Why Are These Boxes Speaking in Tagalog?

The ‘We Live Here’ project wraps utility boxes on Folsom and Howard Streets with Filipino-themed public art. Each box features pairs of letters from the ABAKADA alphabet, illustrated with Tagalog words and Baybayin references. This installation is part of a series of public artworks across the SOMA Pilipinas Cultural Heritage District, highlighting Filipino language, culture, and heritage in the neighborhood.
