WHO is AniMalayaworks?
A collaboration between Filipinx multidisciplinary mover and shaker, mother Anito Gavino (Ani means harvest)and National Youth Poet Laureate Runner up and the Notheast Regional Youth poet laureate, songstress, and filmmaker daughter Malaya Ulan (Malaya means liberation).Together they actively create anti-colonial performance art as a portal to connecting to ancestral land, spirit, and community. Through collaboration, our mother-daughter duo invites artists from wherever we are to co-create, allowing the stories to morph into a more dynamic and ever-morphing storytelling dialogue. We value cross cultural solidarity, highlight marginalized histories, historical research as processes, and investigate intersections through community engaged practices.
I just had to revisit our mission statement and reflect if we are truly committed to it. 🫶🏼🇵🇭🌊

Malaya caught on the spirit and sang at the French quarter to .by.nature with ! Thank you and for hosting us and sharing the history of early Filipino settlements in the bayou dating back to galleon trade times. Cannot wait to share our offerings at the Manila village and St. Malo, a story not just of Filipino immigration but of cross cultural relations between Black and Indigenous. Can’t wait to conjure when we return.
Til next time!
