WHO is AniMalayaworks?
A collaboration between Filipinx multidisciplinary mover and shaker, mother Anito Gavino (Ani means harvest)and National Youth Poet Laureate Runner up and the Notheast Regional Youth poet laureate, songstress, and filmmaker daughter Malaya Ulan (Malaya means liberation).Together they actively create anti-colonial performance art as a portal to connecting to ancestral land, spirit, and community. Through collaboration, our mother-daughter duo invites artists from wherever we are to co-create, allowing the stories to morph into a more dynamic and ever-morphing storytelling dialogue. We value cross cultural solidarity, highlight marginalized histories, historical research as processes, and investigate intersections through community engaged practices.

I just had to revisit our mission statement and reflect if we are truly committed to it. 🫶🏼🇵🇭🌊

Here’s a bit of tidbits from our recent site visit to New Orleans, a beautiful city with beautiful people, a culture or deep history of celebrations, of sadness, of resilience and of abandonment.

Malaya caught on the spirit and sang at the French quarter to .by.nature with ! Thank you and for hosting us and sharing the history of early Filipino settlements in the bayou dating back to galleon trade times. Cannot wait to share our offerings at the Manila village and St. Malo, a story not just of Filipino immigration but of cross cultural relations between Black and Indigenous. Can’t wait to conjure when we return.

Til next time!

Most mornings I’m in New Orleans, I go to Baldwin and Company for my coffee & inspiration.
Tonight I attended a book signing of DeMaurice Smith’s ‘Turf Wars: The Fight for the Soul of America’s Game’. DeMaurice Smith is the former executive director of the NFL Players Assn.

Amongst the incredible storytelling he shared, here are a couple of tidbits I wrote down:
✨His inspiration from James Baldwin to embody ‘intelligent & eloquent rage’
✨ ‘A union (workers, players) is formed from the aggrieved

Mr. Smith was gracious as I was one of the last to meet him to ask to sign my book. I felt like he was in my living room! Enjoy the photos of this beautiful space, on this beautiful night, in beautiful New Orleans, a city whose ✨ inspires
to continue to work for

Always grateful to Baldwin & Co’s team for hosting these events and embodying, unapologetically, the stance of intelligent & eloquent rage.

Also noted: Kent Babb ‘s prompts and questions were 🔥🔥🔥

1. James Baldwin, DeMaurice Smith, and me
2. Turf Wars under the art pieces of James Baldwin, aka my workspace
3. A gorgeous night in the courtyard. The jasmine flowers are so fragrant!
4. A little snippet of Kent Babb’s flavor of convo

A few months ago I had the opportunity to accompany a group of Filipino content creators on their travels to the US as part of the Spirit of America Road to 250 campaign.

In NOLA, we were kapwatized by our friends at Global New Orleans, who coordinated a day of educational touring of St. Malo. This was

Why Are These Boxes Speaking in Tagalog?

The ‘We Live Here’ project wraps utility boxes on Folsom and Howard Streets with Filipino-themed public art. Each box features pairs of letters from the ABAKADA alphabet, illustrated with Tagalog words and Baybayin references. This installation is part of a series of public artworks across the SOMA Pilipinas Cultural Heritage District, highlighting Filipino language, culture, and heritage in the neighborhood.
