🎨 The watercolor portrait series is off to a beautiful start at AlmaVia of San Francisco! 🎨🖌️🖼️

Residents have begun painting portraits of loved ones, landscapes, and much more. Rita created a stunning piece featuring a pair of military boots—a tribute to her father and uncle, who owned a shoe repair shop, while Sidney painted his dear friend Doug.

The act of recreating someone meaningful through art engages multiple cognitive functions - memory recall, visual processing, fine motor skills, and creative problem-solving. But what makes this series extra special is how it encourages life review and storytelling, which are so crucial for emotional well-being and maintaining a sense of identity. 💕✨

🌿The Green Thumbs Club members are showing out in the Gardens neighborhood at AlmaVia of San Francisco, proving that a lovely day in the fall means prime gardening time! 🌿🌱🪴🌳😊

Residents happily checked in on their beloved potted plants, with special attention to the thriving herb garden. The mints are growing wild (in the best way possible!), and everyone's green thumbs are working overtime. Rosalie E beamed with pride as she surveyed the flourishing plants, saying, "These plants are healthy and growing well."

Gardening and plant care offer incredible benefits for seniors' physical and mental health. The hands-on work provides gentle exercise, fine motor skill development, and cognitive engagement as residents plan, nurture, and problem-solve around their plants. But beyond the physical benefits, there's something deeply therapeutic about watching something grow under your care - it creates a sense of purpose, accomplishment, and connection to nature that's absolutely invaluable.

Oasis neighborhood residents at AlmaVia of San Francisco work together on “The Together Tree.”

Joined by art therapist Janae and Spiritual Care director Bridget, they collaborated to create a communal tree inspired by the book “The Together Tree” by Aisha Saeed.

After the group read the book out loud, they reflected on the meaning of togetherness while creating a tree to be displayed for all. One resident shared that togetherness meant “not being alone,” and another resident said “being with people” as she referred to the group.

The therapeutic activity promotes a sense of well-being and belonging, which decreases isolation and can reduce depression.

Game time got even more exciting at AlmaVia of San Francisco with the amazing volunteers from the Perfect Pair program!

Kristell, Raquel, and Luna from SF State University spent a wonderful afternoon with residents playing a fun memory card game featuring different dog breeds. The goal was to find matching pairs of cards to win. You could see the competitive spirits come alive as residents worked their way through, matching up all the adorable pups—from Golden Retrievers to French Bulldogs.

Memory games like this are fantastic brain workouts disguised as pure fun. When residents engage in matching activities, they're strengthening cognitive functions like memory recall, pattern recognition, and concentration - all while having a blast with these wonderful young volunteers.
