We are so excited to welcome this amazing doula to our Golden Gate Family!
Having worked with young children and their families since 1996 (22 of those years in the Bay Area), Amy brings a strong understanding of child and human development and innumerable experiences that have convinced her that every family is a unique, dynamic ecosystem. Amy holds a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education, focusing on infants and toddlers and has worked for over 20 years as an infant/toddler and preschool teacher, and child care center director.
For child development nerds, her view of early childhood, starting with birth, is strongly influenced by Erik Erikson; Urie Bronfenbrenner; John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth; Emi Pikler and Magda Ge**er; Tina Payne Bryson and Dan Siegel; and Gordon Neufeld and Deborah MacNamara.
Amy is the proud parent of three nearly-grown (!) children, all of whom are in college (Mt. Holyoke, Boston College, and Carleton). In addition to babies, she loves traveling, eating, and napping or reading on a grassy lawn. Amy lived in Italy in the 1990s and speaks Italian (fluently), as well as English (her mothertongue). Amy is a 7th generation Texan, happily transplanted to the Bay Area since 1999.
As a postpartum doula, Amy offers physical support (cooking, light housekeeping, babycare, preparing sitz baths, etc.); informational support (feeding, babycare skills, context and perspective, information about products and local resources); and emotional support/encouragement for anyone in the family (including non-medical assessment of adults’ postpartum moods and experience, and care for older siblings).
Amy views herself as a professional partner who helps you learn what YOUR child and YOUR family need you to know. She is someone who can help you discover, find, and learn what you need, and she’ll do her best to smooth the edges of everyday life with a newborn so that you can get some sleep here and there and enjoy this special time.

YES!! Love this visual!! Posted @withregram • @labordoulacompany Reposted from @serenitylifedoula ✨Birthing a baby is an innate ability we are born with!
.
✨Having your pelvis, legs and feet in certain positions can create space for baby to navigate the pelvis and exit easier.
.
✨Be willing to move and change positions during labor and birth!
.
✨Sometimes it is just a small position change than creates just enough space for baby to cross your finish line.
.
✨Laying on your back, knees spread wide open isn’t the best birthing position for most!!
.
✨Hands and knees is an option, with freedom to move your body as it innately progresses through the birthing process.

Check out this awesome collage of birth affirmations that one of our clients recently made as a focal point during labor! She would touch the card that was standing out to her and her partner would quietly encourage her with the statement. Many of these beautiful cards are from @wyld.magick ‘s Enlightened Birth Affirmation deck.

Well, we finally did it! We had our first GGDA Parent Brunch today! It’s been a year and 2 months since we have been able to share a yummy meal with our sweet families we support! The doulas all jumped into action setting up the food and drinks and we enjoyed our food “al fresco” in the beautiful new parklet in front of our center. @kirsten_the_doula your food was amazing as always! Those postpartum families you support are so lucky to have you keeping them nourished!! Thanks @krisloe @mrs.unitedstates2020 @onyxtrs @isa.eeyore @kirsten_the_doula @doulaleah @ericaeharris @doulajen for helping out and for all the wonderful support you give! #doulasrock #goldengatedoulas #bettertogether #letsdoulathis #brunch #momosa #goodfood #pregnant #newbornbaby #doulacrew #supportsmallbusiness

From one of our wonderful birth doulas, @douladbyjanae : “I love being a doula and supporting families throughout pregnancy, labor, delivery and postpartum. I have had the pleasure of working with families of many different races in my career. Although I feel like I do a lot of front loading to prepare all of my families, I sometimes feel like I have to do double to prepare my Black families. I've had more than one Black father ask me if I would do the advocating in the hospital, because they were concerned that if they spoke out they would be seen as an aggressive Black man and would be kicked out and miss the birth of their child. Birthing in a hospital environment can be traumatic enough, but when you are Black it's even more terrifying because in the back of your mind you are wondering will you leave the hospital alive, or will they believe you when you say you are in pain? It is not our job as the Black community to end racism. What I do think we can do to help the Black maternal health crisis is to support other Black people and allies when they want to become doctors, midwives, labor and delivery nurses or birthworkers. These careers involve many years of school, training, and practice, and all of this is expensive. We literally need to be financially supporting those who want to work in the field and want to work to keep Black birthing people and babies alive.” #bmhw21 #blackmaternalhealthweek #blackmamasmatter

On day two of #blackmaternalhealthweek we want to recognize the powerful work being done here in San Francisco by @sisterwebdoulas and their Kindred Birth Companions program: “Our purpose is to support the Black family structure by empowering Black families to have safe, memorable, and joyous birthing experiences. Through awareness, education, and one-on-one support we strive to remove “Black” as a risk factor for morbidity, boost family resiliency and positive parenting experiences, and create a vibrant community.” #bmhw21 #blackmamasmatter #birthjustice #blackmaternalhealth

April is cesarean awareness month. At Golden Gate Doulas, we will will go above and beyond support your birth and help have the best birth experience no matter how your little one enters the world. We make sure you have a good understanding of your options so you can make informed decisions along the way. Help you come up with a cesarean birth plan and have a plan in place for your postpartum recovery! Did you know that you can hand express colostrum before and immediately after the baby is born to have extra “Liquid Gold” on standby for your baby? If, for any reason, your baby needs to go to the “special nursery” you can send the colostrum with them to help establish a more positive breastfeeding journey.
Studies also show that music helps keep you calm and relaxed. Did you know you could create your own playlist and bring your music with you for the birth?
Your partner can use touch and aromatherapy to help keep you grounded.
Clear screens can be used to allow you to meet your baby as soon as they enter the world!
Skin to Skin and even breastfeeding in the OR of you are comfortable doing so.
Our goal is to make sure you have the support you deserve during one of the most important days of your life as a parent! #goldengatedoulas #cesareanawarenessmonth #bellybirth #birth #doula #newborn #baby #welcomelittleone #tinytoes #birthbravely #yougotthis

As doulas, we witness some of the most intimate moments between a birthing person and their partners. Doulas can help partners understand ways they can help the birthing person feel safe, empowered and strong. One of the most important things a doula can do is give the partners tools and evidence based information so they can understand what is “normal” during labor. A calm partner who also feels supported can make for a more positive birth experience. During Covid, doulas had to switch to virtual labor support. We had to prepare those partners to do many of the things that the doula typically would be doing. Watching these partners step into that role and offer support in ways that they may have stepped aside for if a doula was present has been one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had as a doula! #goldengatedoulas #worlddoulaweek2021 #support #birth #partners #labor #laboranddelivery
