April marks Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) — a movement rooted in decades of advocacy, from the civil rights era to the founding of the first r**e crisis centers.

This year’s theme, “25 Years Stronger: Looking Back, Moving Forward,” honors that history while reaffirming the work ahead. It reminds us that progress is possible when communities come together to raise awareness and drive prevention.

Awareness and prevention go hand in hand. Education, consent, and community accountability are key to building safer futures.

Today is . Community Forward honors the strength, resilience, and leadership of trans and gender-expansive people—especially those we serve who are impacted by homelessness and violence.

In San Francisco, transgender, non-binary, and gender-nonconforming people are 18 times more likely to experience homelessness than the general population—a stark reminder of the inequities that persist.

At a time when trans lives are too often impacted by harmful policies and systems, our commitment is clear: we stand in solidarity. We are committed to creating spaces where trans people are safe, affirmed, and heard—not just today, but every day.

Visibility matters. Protection matters. Community matters.

We were honored to attend Raising our Voice: Rising in Power at San Francisco City Hall. Thank you to Mayor Daniel Lurie, Supervisor Myrna Melgar, Supervisor Connie Chan, District Attorney Brooke Jenkins, the Human Rights Commission, the Commission on the Status of Women, and the Department on the Status of Women for hosting an inspiring Women's History Month celebration.

The event recognized remarkable leaders whose work strengthens the well-being of women, girls, and gender-expansive people across San Francisco. We are grateful to join in uplifting Dr. Nicole Barnett, LaVerda Allen, Olga Talamante, and more leaders who are driving efforts in advancing gender equity in our community.

In honor of Women’s History Month, we’re grateful to the National Women’s Shelter Network and Clorox for donating 50 hygiene care kits to support the women in our programs. 💙

Each kit—filled with essentials like soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, face wash, ear plugs, and more—helps ensure our participants have access to everyday necessities as they focus on healing and rebuilding their lives.

Thank you for recognizing Women’s History Month by investing in the dignity, health, and well-being of women in our community.

It was a pleasure for SF Women's Housing Coalition and the Community Forward team to meet with Assemblymembers Isaac Bryan, Matt Haney, Catherine Stefani, and Buffy Wicks to discuss AB 1573—a bill that ensures survivors of violence are included in conversations on around supportive housing. We are so inspired by their incredible leadership and dedicated teams!

Today’s conversations set a strong foundation for tomorrow’s panel, “Unseen and Unheard: Building Coalitions and Housing Models for Survivors of Violence How Los Angeles and San Francisco are Investing in Population-Specific Responses through Collaboration and Policy Change” at the Housing California 2026 Annual Conference, featuring Sammie Rayner and Rebecca Jackson.

We’re proud to share that Rebecca Jackson, VP of Reentry & Public Affairs, and Sammie Rayner, Co-CEO, will be speaking at the Housing California 2026 Annual Conference in Sacramento. 🌱

Rebecca and Sammie will join fellow speakers for “Unseen and Unheard: Building Coalitions and Housing Models for Survivors of Violence...” a session exploring how cross-sector partnerships can advance survivor-centered housing solutions. With unaccompanied women and survivors making up more than 25% of California’s homeless population, this conversation is critical to building safer, more equitable housing systems.

What an unforgettable night. ✨

Thanks to this incredible community, the Community Forward Ball raised over $130,000 to support women and survivors rebuilding their lives.

Every ticket purchased. Every paddle raised. Every moment of joy in that room—every show of support carried meaning. Your belief in our mission was felt through out the room.

With your support, we can continue providing comprehensive services that give women the courage to heal, the strength to rebuild, and the dignity they deserve. This is the power of community in action.

Community matters—it saves lives. And together, we remain rooted in courage and unshakeable in our commitment to this work. From the bottom of our hearts — thank you. 💜

Impact is not felt equally.

In San Francisco’s 2024 Point-In-time count, 24% of unhoused survey participants identified as Black, African American, or African, even though Black women make up less than 5% of the city’s overall population. Among the 3,179 unhoused women identified, this stark overrepresentation underscores how Black women remain disproportionately impacted.

To center survivors is to center Black women. At Community Forward, our holistic work is shaped by survivors’ experiences, helping people move beyond crisis toward stability and thriving.
