In my 20s I worked at Sugarloaf, studied Spanish in Mexico, went to college.

Gently stop…

And breathe…

What do you notice now?

Reminder:
Take a moment and
notice what you feel,
physically and emotionally.
Notice what you’re thinking.

How are you?
What do you need
right now?
How can you
meet that need?

Perfectionism
Over Planning
People Pleasing
at
Work

letsdealwithit.com

Perfectionism looks really good at work, but it means overworking and endlessly checking your work.
The emotional roller coaster that goes with it is a strain too.
Perfectionism is often
generated by fear.
It can be so draining.

Over planning at work looks good too.
But it requires serious mental energy to think through what could come up and make plans in case it does.
You think to yourself, “If this happens then we’ll activate Plan B, but if this other thing happens we’ll follow Plans X, Y and Z...” Some days you run out of letters in the alphabet…
The anxiety and effort are exhausting.

People pleasing can take many forms: perfectionism, over planning or strategic, subtle fawning.
(Fawning on people sounds like,
“Oh King / Mom / Dad / Perpetrator, you’re so wise and wonderful!” Implicit in fawning is the fearful thought, “Please, please! Don’t kill me! Don’t say ‘Off with her head.’”)

The emergency responses of
1. Fight
2. Flight
3. Fawn on People or
4. Freeze / Collapse
are hard wired in us at birth.
We first felt these responses when we felt threatened when we were little.

Many of us continue to feel threatened under certain circumstances,
and work is a big one.
The fear of losing our jobs,
displeasing authority figures (or anyone)
or being unpleasantly surprised
trigger us to feel one or more of our
hard wired
Emergency Responses.

’s examples of how trauma can show up at work on March 25, 2023? inspired this post. Thank you.

When you think of all the ways a person can overwork and the
drive that makes us do so,
think:
burnt out, exhausted, weary…
medical leave, quitting.
Save yourself!
Get help!

The burdened internal system
Center
Self: This is the deepest essence of every person. When differentiated, Self acts, as a wise, compassionate leader, able to heal and lead the system.
Top
Managers: Protectors, act preemptively to keep you feeling secure by controlling people, events, and other parts. Carry burdens of responsibility, fear relinquishing control will lead to worse outcomes. Protect against anything that leads to vulnerability, pain, or instability.
Right
Firefighters: These protectors spring into action whenever pain from other parts, especially exiles, gets activated or threatens to overwhelm. Firefighters repress exiles, release pressure and get out of danger fast. Can overpower managers efforts to control the system.
Common firefighter, behaviors and traits:
Abusing substances, attempting su***de, binging, overspending, affairs, dissociating, distracting, cutting.
Left
Exiles: These parts have been rejected or traumatized, holding wounds, memories, terror, pain, shame. Young, often frozen in time, hiding for protection, eager to share their story. Protectors fear this will destabilize you.

An overview of IFS principles
1 Multiplicity
The human mind is naturally divided into parts. The parts of one person demonstrate different temperaments, talents, desires, ages, and gender. Together, they form an internal family, which organizes in the same way as other human systems. Each part, in its non-extreme state, wants what is best for the internal system. …
Parts are forced into extreme states by their environment… Extreme or isolated parts will use a variety of strategies to gain influence within the internal system in order to have their goals met, often becoming polarized with other parts, who have conflicting goals. The parts will only relinquish their protective or extreme rules when they believe it is safe to do so.
The goal is *not* to fuse all these personalities. Instead, the IFS therapist seeks to restore leadership, balance, and *harmony* in the internal system, such that each part can take its preferred valuable role.
Once internal and external constraints are removed, a part always reveals an innate drive toward balance and health.

A basic premise of IFS is that people have an innate drive toward and wisdom about their own health. They not only try to maintain steady states and react to feedback, they also strive toward creativity and intimacy. They come fully equipped to lead harmonious, internal and external lives.

From that basic premise, it follows that when people have chronic problems, these inner resources and wisdom are not being fully accessed. Elements in the systems in which they are embedded or that are embedded within them are constraining their access to these resources.

IFS therapy is designed to help people find and release these constraints.

14/02/2023

Dealing with anxiety and trauma draws on your resilience. If you don’t have much, it can be nurtured and can develop mightily. Life circumstances can prevent you from developing resilience. And life circumstances can also help you develop resilience. You might have a lot of resilience already. Your resilience might be all about roots, root systems, who loved you in childhood, (attachment), who modeled resilience for you (Vicarious resilience is a thing, just as vicarious trauma is a thing.), who gave you strength to grow from a child into an adult… and, drawing a metaphor to plants, the people who gave you those qualities may have helped you grow the capacity plus the ability to draw fresh water, oxygen and sunlight from your environment (be it a harsh environment or a nurturing one).
You can develop attachment even if you just had a short period of time with that support and care. And get this, you can develop resilience even if the support and care doesn’t come from a person; it could be a pet or a doll, comic, book, movie, a TV show, etc. You could develop resilience from a stranger telling you, Honey, what they’re doing isn’t ok…
And on a separate topic, here’s how I’m filling my bucket during this break: sailing, taking photos, going on walks, enjoying the weather, rain or shine, again.
