we all have our limits and this is mine. i am breaking up with meta.

i love so many things about instagram. It started as a way of sharing photos with friends and then became a way to share information too.

but we all have our limits and this is mine.

you can find me on blue sky and signal and hopefully a photo sharing app that isn’t trying to control the ability of human beings to make decisions about our bodies or actively contributing to an oligarchy.

This is Maury Stein. He was my first midwifery teacher. From the ages of 19-20 I spent a year under his tutelage contemplating the role fear plays in birth and death and medicine… and well, life in the United States. This 69 year old male sociologist cracked open my world and made me *learn to see. Little did I know at the time that helping others do the same would become my life’s work. I am forever grateful.

“After witnessing his wife give birth to their daughter, he began teaching Birth and Death at Brandeis, a wildly popular course ultimately taken by thousands of students. The course countered the very American fear of birth and death and gave a new, more nuanced narrative that many students took to heart and Maury embodied, even up to the moment of his own passing.”

14 years ago today i attended my first birth - i lived in New York and after laboring at home in Brooklyn, the three of us took a cab into the City. We landed at NYU Langone Hospital and labored in the hallway in very much active labor because no l&d rooms were available. My gorgeous friend Rompie labored like a boss and gave birth to this kiddo, Koby and her and her partner Evan grew their amazing family by one cub. What a gift it was that Rompie trusted me to doula her firstborn into this world. It was an incredible day and a day that changed the trajectory of my entire life. love you and , for trusting me in that sacred space with you. I could never thank you enough.
