This month, we honor the strength of Veterans affected by lung cancer and raise awareness about the importance of early detection and prevention. Veterans may face higher risks due to service-related exposures, making regular screenings and support even more critical.

NCIRE recognizes the dedicated efforts of Principal Investigators Dr. Sunny Wang, whose research focuses on barriers to lung cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment, particularly for older patients, and Dr. Alison Rustagi, who studies the epidemiology of screening for lung cancer, a disease for which Veterans have an increased risk.

Let’s stand together to promote lung health, support those in treatment, and remember those we’ve lost.

November is Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Awareness Month. This month is dedicated to raising awareness about COPD, a leading cause of death and disability in the United States, according to the American Lung Association.

Veterans have a higher risk of developing COPD due to exposure to dust, chemicals, and burn pits during service, and smoking, which is more common amongst Veterans.

NCIRE supports the research of Principal Investigator, Mehrdad Arjomandi, MD, whose work investigates how environmental and airborne exposures contribute to the development and progression of chronic lung diseases. By integrating physiologic, imaging, and biologic data from large, well-characterized cohorts, his research aims to clarify the mechanisms underlying COPD and related airway disorders and to improve how these conditions are detected, classified, and managed.

Dr. Shira Maguen co-published a study that explores the link between moral injury and suicidal thoughts and behaviors among US military Veterans, healthcare workers, and first responders.

Titled “Moral injury is independently associated with suicidal ideation and su***de attempt in high-stress, service-oriented occupations”, the study investigates the risk associated with moral injury that is not attributable to common mental health issues.

Academic and Research Leader Dr. Carl Grunfeld to be honored on October 29th

Dr. Carl Grunfeld steps down in October 2025 after a 48-year career of federal leadership and academic research. He will continue teaching medical students and fellows at San Francisco Veterans Affairs Health Care System as UCSF Professor of Medicine, Emeritus. Grunfeld’s research teams made crucial observations on metabolic complications of infections, such as HIV, with results defining how inflammation causes atherosclerosis including in chronic inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis.

An event celebrating Dr. Grunfeld's legacy will be held on Wednesday, October 29, 1-4pm at the San Francisco VA Health Care System Campus in San Francisco, CA.

Loop diuretics and subsequent use of urinary symptom medications in older adults: evaluation of a possible prescribing cascade

Loop diuretic (LD) use may lead to a prescribing cascade whereby urinary symptoms are ascribed to genitourinary syndromes and treated with urinary symptom medications (USMs).

Drs. Michael Steinman and John Boscardin joined researchers to investigate if LDs lead to increased USM use among older adults and whether this potential prescribing cascade varies across key characteristics, in the study titled: “Loop diuretics and subsequent use of urinary symptom medications in older adults: evaluation of a possible prescribing cascade”.

The study was published in The Journals of Gerontology: Series A.

A Multi-Outcome Prognostic Model for Community-Dwelling Older Adults Admitted to Skilled Nursing Facilities for Post-Acute Care

Nearly 20% of hospitalized older adults are discharged to a skilled nursing facility (SNF) for short-term rehabilitation. Many subsequently experience adverse outcomes, such as hospital readmissions, transitioning to long-term care rather than returning home, or death.

To guide shared decision making, Drs. John Boscardin, Alexander K. Smith, and Sei Lee helped develop a prognostic model for multiple outcomes for older adults admitted to SNFs.

The three co-published a retrospective cohort study titled “A Multi-Outcome Prognostic Model for Community-Dwelling Older Adults Admitted to Skilled Nursing Facilities for Post-Acute Care”. The study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Directors Association.

World Arthritis Day, on October 12th, serves as a global initiative to raise awareness about arthritis and related conditions, and to advocate for better treatments and support for those living with these conditions. It is an opportunity to increase awareness about arthritis, advocate for better support and treatment, and encourage individuals to seek medical advice if they experience symptoms, leading to earlier diagnosis and better management.

According to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), in the United States, an estimated 21.2% of adults have arthritis, more than 53 million Americans.

The VA provides a wide range of services and support for veterans diagnosed with arthritis, including various types of arthritis such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and gout. These services are designed to help manage symptoms, improve quality of life, and provide necessary medical and therapeutic care.

With VA Telehealth, those with arthritis may contact their VA health provider from the comfort of their home. Learn more: https://news.va.gov/tag/telerheumatology/

NCIRE joins the VA in encouraging anyone with symptoms of arthritis to speak to your health care provider.
