A year ago today, BART announced the completion of its Earthquake Safety Program. It retrofitted the original tracks, stations, and fortified the Transbay Tube, the underwater tunnel connecting San Francisco and Oakland, so that it can protect itself and withstand a strong earthquake with a recurrence rate of once in a thousand years.

The BART system along with The Transbay Tube withstood the 1989 earthquake and continued to serve the public within 12 hours from when the earth shook.

This retrofit project was well over 20 years in the making. From planning, funding, to breaking ground, and culminating in its final completion.

We want to shine a light on the countless people who have worked on this project throughout the years. Thank you for keeping us safe as we travel and commute throughout the Bay Area. For all those who work in risk management and disaster prevention, we recognize and value your contributions.

What is acceptance? It is that balanced, rooted stance after we have experienced that intense internal turmoil, reflected upon the situation, examined the various options available, from this place of grounded fortitude we choose the appropriate course of action.

It is the luxury of having clarity of mind that we cultivated for ourselves and the privilege to choose how we respond. A privilege that we afford ourselves through practice, by continually orienting toward this stance.

Often, we are already assuming this stance through the turbulence of happenings in the world. May she remind us of the strength that we each carry.
