Ward 86, the first dedicated HIV clinic in the United States, recently marked its 40th anniversary with a celebration at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital.

Since its inception, Ward 86 has been a key element of the "San Francisco model" of comprehensive community-based HIV care. Over the years, the clinic has pioneered innovations in HIV treatment and prevention that have been adopted nationwide and around the world.

"Treatment has dramatically changed the lives of our patients. But let me tell you what has not changed. Number one, [Ward 86] is patient-centered. And secondly, we are constantly figuring out better ways to deliver scientific advances in HIV to our patients," said Dr. Diane Havlir, SFGH's chief of HIV, infectious diseases, and global medicine. "Ward 86 is the Silicon Valley of innovation for AIDS care, and what we do here is transferred both locally and globally."

The Indigenous HART Program
IHART2 is the second iteration of the Indigenous HIV/AIDS Research Training (IHART) program. IHART2 is an innovative research training program for Indigenous, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (NHPI) and other underrepresented ethnic minority scholars. The IHART2 program aims to develop a network of scholars dedicated to culturally grounded research that will contribute to ameliorating health disparities among American Indians/Alaska Natives (AI/AN) and the historically underserved HIV/AIDS population of NHPI .

September 18, 2022 marks National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day. Led by the AIDS Institute, this day brings attention to the people who are living long and full lives with HIV and to their health and social needs. As the 50 year and older age group is the fastest growing population with HIV it is more important than ever to find ways to support this population.

Ongoing global Covid-19 vaccine and therapeutic inequities threaten to prolong and exacerbate the pandemic for all countries. As advocates, academics, and policymakers alike call for the U.S. and other wealthy nations to share these lifesaving resources with the world, it is prudent to consider the lessons learned from the HIV pandemic that can be translated into this current moment. PEPFAR and the experiences of HIV health workers offer a roadmap and over 20 years of learnings for implementing vaccine and therapeutic scale-up and delivery efforts in low resource settings.

On January 20th, the Harvard Global Health Institute and the Harvard University Center for AIDS Research Grand Rounds event will bring together members of the HIV research and advocacy communities to critically reflect upon applicable lessons for approaching Covid-19 healthcare delivery and identify necessary steps for a paradigm shift in how the world responds to global health crises. The Grand Rounds will include a 1-hour panel discussion between leaders of the global HIV response and a 30-minute fireside conversation between Dr. Anthony S. Fauci and Dr. John Nkengasong. These conversations will be oriented towards practical, timely steps that advocates, academics, and policymakers can take to advance equity in this and future global health crisis. Register today to join us for what promises to be insightful and urgently needed dialogue.

As the Bay Area emerges from one health crisis, medical professionals are increasingly confident it can rise from another.

For efforts to address the HIV/AIDS epidemic as it hits the 40th anniversary of the first reported cases, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic casts a long shadow, but infectious disease experts and other medical professionals working on implementing Getting to Zero HIV plans in the Bay Area told a story of efforts hampered but generally resilient.

That, of course, doesn't mean local efforts are out of the woods yet.

AIDS: A Story of Courage and Collaboration

June 5, 2021, marks 40 years since the first reported cases of what would eventually become known as AIDS. The commitment of UCSF, the city, and the community in addressing the AIDS epidemic revolutionized the standard of care, saving millions of lives here and around the world. That legacy of leadership and collaboration continues today in the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

June 5th marks 40 years since the first cases of AIDS were reported by the federal government. It is also HIV Long-Term Survivors Awareness Day.

On this important date in the long fight against HIV/AIDS, the National AIDS Memorial — the nation’s federally-designated memorial to AIDS — will honor the more than 700,000 lives lost to AIDS, the survivors, and the heroes, during the past four decades.

Starting at noon special guests and visitors will be able to stroll through the Grove to see the thousands of names engraved within the memorial and experience a powerful 40-Block display of the AIDS Memorial Quilt. There will be a special performance from members of the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus at 12 noon. Throughout the day, visitors will be able to read the names of loved ones lost to AIDS, which will be softly amplified throughout the Grove and leave personal tributes on Quilt signature panels. This moving observance brings together the power of the Quilt and the beauty of the Grove, together to reflect on four decades of activism, resilience, hope and remembrance.

While strolling through the Grove, you will be able to view digital storyboards available via your smartphone that will share stories of the Quilt, the Grove, and key historical touchpoints.
