On this day 30 years ago in 1995, one of my favorite and most influential albums of all time was released. It was the debut release from Son Volt following the dissolution of Jay Farrar’s band Uncle Tupelo. Rolling Stone picked it as #9 on their list of Best Albums of the year with its mix of loud distorted guitars, dusty acoustic melancholy alt-country tracks, and Jay Farrar’s poignant lyrics and weathered vocals. Give it a spin today!

Co-founder of The Mother Hips Greg Loiacono has released his debut single, “Hope We Get To Dance” with his band Greg Loiacono & Stingray!

“I was listening to Curtis Mayfield’s album ‘Roots’ when the concept for ‘Hope We Get To Dance’ hit me. I thought Stingray could create an energy and spirit in the vein of that record,” says Loiacono. “Because we sometimes lean into the rock side of things, it ended up sounding like Curtis meets Led Zeppelin. I think of it as a reminder that the pure power of dancing to and feeling music is always there for us. It’s up to us when we want to let go and jump in.”
Spin the single on your favorite streaming service and pick up a limited edition Stingray t-shirt or trucker hat via Greg’s Web Store:

The debut single is a greasy, soul-rock anthem celebrating personal freedom and expression. Fronted by Loiacono, the vocalist, guitarist, and co-founder of San Francisco rock legends The Mother Hips, Stingray features a lineup of acclaimed Bay Area musicians, including drummer Michael Urbano (Lindsey Buckingham, John Hiatt), percussionist /vocalist Vicki Randle (Mavis Staples, George Benson), Kofy Brown (bass/vocals), Danny Eisenberg (keys) and Tom Ayres (guitar).

Today, August 12th, is National Vinyl Record Day! On this day in 1877, Thomas Edison unveiled an invention which would change the course of history forever. It was a device that recorded sound on to tinfoil cylinders. Over the years that technology was developed and evolved in to the gramophone, and then the phonograph!

.frisell does not sit still for very long. He is constantly touring all over the world. I caught up with Bill in Berkeley at the The Freight a few weekends ago where he was playing two shows with his “Good Dog, Happy Man” band lineup of Greg Leisz on pedal steel guitar, Tony Scherr on bass, and Kenny Wollesen on drums. He was kind enough to take the time to sign some items for his web store.... Vinyl, books, CDs and posters were sold at the shows. Some remaining autographed merch is available in Bill’s store along side Bill Frisell t-shirts he designed himself. For exclusive merch, tour dates, and news, visit https://www.billfrisell.com/

Low Stock Alert!
The remaining numbers of the limited edition vinyl only pressing of Jay Farrar and Shannon McNally’s record ‘Don’t Ya Take It Too Bad’ are dwindling. These will not be re-pressed. Visit Son Volt’s Store or Shannon McNally’s Bandcamp page to pick one up before they are gone for good!

Here’s Shanon’s perspective on the project:
Jay Farrar called me in late 2022 and said “I am mixing those songs we recorded”. I remember thinking “what songs Jay?”. He and I had recorded a number of tunes in 2008 which I hadn’t really thought a lot about since. I was pregnant with my daughter at that time and had just made ‘Small Town Talk” which hit a wall of difficulty. A couple years went by before I had the chance to wonder why we hadn’t finished that project and then about another ten went by before that phone call.

I was of course happy to hear that he’d turned his ears back to that time but couldn’t really remember much of what we had done or if it would still stand up. So I was very pleased when he sent me initial mixes and asked if I’d sing a few more new ones that he’d penned to round the album out. Jay has an excellent and humble sense of space and time and that’s what you’ll hear on this album.

Thanks to everyone who resurrected this gem. I am extremely pleased that it has turned back up. The selection of songs sends me back to a sweet spot in my musical vocabulary. I love the new songs as well. Jay’s internal sense of stillness is pretty regal. It sounds like snowflakes before they hit that blanket of snow colliding in virtual silence with the exception of just a wisp of wind and melody.

Designed this image for a great show coming up Thursday. Greg Loiacono (The Mother Hips) and his band Stingray! If you haven’t been to The Make Out Room, here’s your chance. It is one of the last surviving small down home non-pretentious bar/music venues left in San Francisco. It doesn’t look like it has changed since I caught my first show there in the late ‘90’s, and I love that. Always a good time at The Make Out Room. The band has been recording new material and rehearsing and is super tight. Stingray features Michael Urbano (Lindsey Buckingham) on drums, Danny Eisenberg (The Mother Hips, Phil Lesh) on keys, (Vicki Randle (Mavis Staples, Tonight Show with Jay Leno Band) on percussion and backing vocals, Kofy Brown (Skip the Needle) on bass, and Tom Ayres (Persephone’s Bees, Marc and the Casuals) on guitar. Tix are only $10 adv/$15 door. Show 7-10pm w/DJ Foodcourt (Parker T. Gibbs) on the turntables before and after. Come on out! Guaranteed good time! Record Release Day for Jay Farrar & Shannon McNally’s record ‘Don’t Ya Take It Too Bad’. Limited Edition Vinyl still available… Only 500 pressed!

From Jay: “You KNOW Bob Neuwirth?,” I asked. Bob Neuwirth was immortalized as Bob Dylan’s sidekick in D. A. Pennebaker’s film (Don’t Look Back). My own experience with Bob Neuwirth was brief but inspirational to the core. Before a Son Volt show in TX in the mid 90s someone had passed along that Bob Neuwirth was doing a show across town and that he was covering “Tear Stained Eye”. I made it to Bob’s show - an unimaginable life/profession affirming experience. Who needs awards shows?

“No, I just met Bob Neuwirth - we were talking about Bobby Charles,” Shannon replied. The event was a Hal Wilner production called “The Rose and The Briar” and we were all there to perform a few folk songs to fit the theme. The visual of Shannon casually chatting with Bob Neuwirth is illustrative. I was too frozen in my seat - just taking it all in. For Shannon this wouldn’t do. Shannon is an old soul with a track record that speaks for itself. Who else has done a record with Dr. John?

George and Tammy, Conway and Loretta, Richard and Linda, Gram and Emmylou…. duo/duet singing has always been a viable sub-category, if not a time-honored tradition in folk and country music. This project with Shannon spans 10 plus years. With no budget and no record company, it became a field recording of sorts - catch as catch can in between respective recording and touring schedules.

Thanks and praises to all who made this decade plus project happen. Special shout out to Monica Farrar for patience and support. An additional “Collaboration Series Vol. 2” is in the works which features selected songs by Bob Neuwirth, recorded with Kelly Willis, tentatively titled “The Other Bob.”
