Yesterday we kicked off 2020 Impact.tech seminars season with "Cellular Agriculture" taught by Elliot Swartz from The Good Food Institute. Elliot delivered an excellent summary of the science behind cultivated meat and shared valuable market insights. As one of the attendees pointed out -- it was several PhD theses packed into one neat presentation. We couldn't agree more!

Earlier this month, we celebrated 50Y's fourth birthday, our new HQ, and our portfolio founders' incredible work and achievements!

Thank you to all who attended in person or in spirit. Each and every one of you supports the 50Y universe as we work to solve the world's biggest problems through technology entrepreneurship!

We were also lucky to highlight products from three of our portfolio companies: plant-based "chicken" nuggets from Rebellyous Foods, a plant-based “steak” demo from Emergy Labs, and non-alcoholic, nootropic, and adaptogen-based Euphoric drinks from Kin!

Below are photos from the night. See if you can spot yourself and feel free to tag and share!

🌟 🎄Happy Holidays from the 50Y Team

We are excited about the new Impact.tech seminar on Synthetic Biology! Apply to join – learning more about the synbio field is an investment for the future.

What is Synthetic Biology? What are the modern methods used for the manipulation of biological systems? How can synthetic biology be used to produce fuels, biomaterials, drugs, and food?

To find out, apply to join our new Impact.tech seminar "Introduction to Synthetic Biology" taking place on Thu, Jan 24th at 5pm - 8pm. The seminar will be hosted by John Cumbers, the founder of SynBioBeta who holds a PhD in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, and Biochemistry.

Are you interested in Clean Chemicals? Want to learn why it might be a good time to disrupt an industry, where the main players have not changed since World War 2?

Impact.tech deep dive seminar on Clean Chemicals will take place on Wednesday, December 12th at 5pm-8pm in San Francisco.

Apply to attend here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdcQECfZMVuH2NcZt_8jRRZGPvUb7ZvmGr8QQ5nFXm21A8VNg/viewform

We're excited to announce a new Impact.tech deep dive seminar on Clean Chemicals! The event will take place on Wednesday, December 12th at 5pm - 8pm.

Chemical industry supports 25% of U.S. GDP, but simultaneously, it is responsible for 40% of U.S. industrial waste. Clean chemicals, also known as green chemicals, promise to keep the same products on the market while dramatically lowering the environmental impact and decreasing the reliance on fossil fuels.

Drawing from recent learnings of biochemistry and synthetic biology such as CRISPR, new companies attempt to disrupt the industry where main players have not changed since the beginning of the 20th century.

You will leave the seminar knowing:
- What are clean chemicals?
- What has shaped and defined the chemical industry at large?
- What are the 12 principles of green chemistry?
- Can the chemical industry, where the main players have not changed since World War 2, be disrupted? Why now might be a good time?

The seminar will be taught by Wojciech Osowiecki, a PhD candidate in chemistry at UC Berkeley. Wojciech researches electrochemical conversion of carbon dioxide to fuels as a method of renewable energy storage and emission-neutral clean chemicals production. He holds a joint bachelor and master degree in chemistry from Yale University.

Do you want to learn more about Cellular Agriculture or New Technologies in Plant-based Food Production? Apply to attend the Impact.tech deep-dive seminars on October 3rd and October 10th!

Read more and apply here: https://impact.tech/seminars

Are you interested in cellular agriculture or new technologies in plant-based food production? So are we, and we're thrilled to announce new cohorts of Impact.tech deep-dive seminars around these topics!

New technologies in plant-based food production on October 3rd at 5pm-8pm:
The plant-based foods sector has experienced tremendous growth and innovation as plant-based alternatives to animal products are increasingly adopted into the diets of mainstream consumers seeking healthier or more sustainable options. These products have come a long way in replicating the taste, texture, and mouthfeel of their animal-based counterparts. However, there is still ample room for food technology and product development to enable more significant inroads into mainstream markets. We will discuss opportunities all across the product development pipeline - from genetic mapping to develop better plant protein crop strains, to novel protein isolation and functionalization methods, to mechanical processing and formulation to better replicate the structure and flavor of meat.

Cellular Agriculture on October 10th at 5pm-8pm:
Cellular agriculture is an interdisciplinary branch of science at the intersection of medicine and farming. Cellular agriculture capitalizes on breakthroughs in tissue-engineering, material sciences, bioengineering, and synthetic biology to design new ways of producing existing agricultural products like milk, meat, fragrances, and rhino horn from cells and microorganisms [instead of whole animals].

Both seminars will be taught by Liz Specht, a Senior Scientist with the Good Food Institute, a non-profit organization advancing plant-based and clean meat food technology. Liz has a bachelor’s in chemical engineering from Johns Hopkins University, a doctorate in biological sciences from UC San Diego, and postdoctoral research experience at the University of Colorado. At GFI, she works with researchers, funding agencies, entrepreneurs, and venture capital firms to prioritize work that advances plant-based alternatives, cellular agriculture, and clean meat. Liz is fantastic, and we are very excited to have her teach the seminars.

Impact.tech deep-dive seminars:
Our deep-dive seminars are designed to give a quick overview of the state of science, costs of scaling, and players already in the field -- institutions, startups, investors, and corporates. Each seminar last 3 hours and are invite-only. We get a very curated group of 15-20 individuals with practical, near-term interest in the field. Anyone can apply through forms linked below. Seminars have tiered pricing, allowing participants to pay according to their abilities. We charge between $25 - $85, which goes towards the costs of the seminar. We're aiming at a healthy mix of entrepreneurs, scientists, and investors at each of our events.
Space for the Impact.tech seminars is extremely limited; thus we will try to give access to those that demonstrate a real interest in the topic and also the ability to make an impact in the matter after the launch seminar. Please fill in as much info as you think is relevant for us to make the best attendee choices. We will get back to you within a few days.
