IGOT Founded in 2006, IGOT is commitment of addressing global disparities in orthopaedic trauma care. healthcare system.

Our Mission:
IGOT’s mission is to build capacity in musculoskeletal care through global partnerships. Our Vision:
IGOT's vision is to be the global leader in academic partnership in orthopaedic surgery. Our Values:
IGOT's values include Equity, Collaboration and Scholarship awards. Leadership:
The purpose of IGOT's Leadership Initiative is to foster the next generation of global leaders in orthopaedic surgery. IGOT implements this goal through editorials, research articles, leadership training, research fellowships, observerships, mentorships, and presentations at national and international conferences. IGOT also encourages collaboration among like-minded organizations to achieve a common goal through associations, such as COACT and ACTUAR. Education:
Live courses-
IGOT's (Institute for Global Orthopaedics and Traumatology) Surgical Education pillar strives to provide orthopaedic surgeons from low-to-middle income countries (LMICs) with the training and educational resources needed to save limbs and lives. To prevent amputations in LMICs, IGOT has created the Surgical Management And Reconstructive Training (SMART) Course, which is hosted locally in San Francisco, and internationally, in Tanzania, Nepal, and Guadalajara annually. Other current country partners: Malawi, Ghana, Uganda and Nicaragua. Livestream-
IGOT Webinar is an online educational resource created in collaboration with SIGN using the IGOT Surgical Management and Reconstructive Training (SMART) course curriculum. The bi-monthly webinars include a combination of didactic lectures, case discussions, and Q&A sessions led by an expert panel of North American and International orthopaedic surgeons experienced in different orthopaedic techniques and subspecialties. This virtual platform has allowed for a more comprehensive reach of orthopaedic surgeon attendees worldwide. Online Learning Portal-
IGOT's Learning Portal goal is to offer an online platform for surgical education that is easily accessible, self-paced and free to supplement the content of the SMART Course as well as provide access to those who are unable to attend a course. The IGOT Portal is a novel endeavor that we hope to scale and expand using already existing technology. It strives to leverage our expert network of faculty and partner institutions to crowdsource solutions to surgical cases and meet the needs of orthopaedic surgeons in developing countries. Global Rotation Elective and Global Scholars Program-
The purpose of IGOT's Global Rotation Elective and Global Scholars Program and Orthopaedic Observership is to facilitate the flow of orthopaedic knowledge between our global partners and UCSF's Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. We invite members of our partner institutions to partake in the Global Scholars Program and Orthopaedic Observerships at the Orthopaedic Trauma Institute (OTI) to share knowledge of various surgical methods in the U.S. IGOT also enables fourth-year UCSF orthopaedic residents to learn from our global partner sites through a one-month Global Elective Rotation abroad. If you are interested in finding out more about the PGY4 Global Rotation Elective or Global Scholars Program and Orthopaedic Observerships, email us at igot.oti@ucsf.edu. Research-
The goal of IGOT’s Global Research Initiative is to enable orthopaedic surgeons from low-and-middle-income countries (LMICs) to conduct high-quality studies on how to reduce the burden of musculoskeletal disease in resource-poor environments. To achieve this goal, IGOT hosts the annual “International Research Symposium,” provides guidance on study design and data management for partner institutions, and supports the year-long Morgan and Madison McClellan International Research Fellowship for one 3rd/4th year medical student. Since 2006, IGOT has worked with 65 global leaders across 10 countries on 45 research projects and facilitated the travel of 50 IGOT ambassadors and scholars to and from our partner institutions.

UCSF’s PGY4 orthopaedic surgery resident, Dr. Kelly Bach, recently returned home from her four-week global rotation at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, Ghana 🇬🇭 Dr. Bach was impressed with the residents and consultants incredible passion and determination to ensure better outcomes for their patients in a resource-limited setting and learned greatly from their ability to adapt to imperfect circumstances. We are looking forward to having a resident from KATH participate in an observership at UCSF soon!
