In honor of Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, we’re answering a common question we hear from patients and families: Is Alzheimer's Genetic?

Yes, Alzheimer’s disease can have a genetic component, but the answer is not always straightforward.

The majority of cases are due to a combination of: environmental, lifestyle, and genetic factors. This is known as multifactorial inheritance.

However, in a small number of cases, approximately 5%, Alzheimer's is caused by a change in a single gene. This leads to what’s known as monogenic or familial Alzheimer’s disease. It often starts at an earlier age, before age 60, and runs strongly in families.

If you or someone in your family has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, a genetic counselor can help determine whether the condition in your family is likely due to multifactorial causes or familial Alzheimer’s. They will review your personal and family medical history, identify patterns that may show inherited risk, and, if needed, discuss genetic testing options.

This information can help you understand the chance of other family members developing the disease and guide decisions about health monitoring, planning, and support.

At Genome Medical, our genetic counselors are available to help you through this process. If you are looking for support we invite you to schedule an appointment at GenomeMedical.com/individuals

Today, we take time to reflect on the importance of diversity, equity and inclusivity in healthcare.

On Juneteenth, we celebrate freedom and honor the many Black scientists and medical pioneers whose contributions have made a lasting impact on medicine—especially in the field of genetics. Their work continues to inspire us and helps us empower people to better understand and manage their health.

We also recognize World Sickle Cell Day, bringing attention to a condition that affects over 100,000 Americans, many of whom are of African descent. Although challenges in access and treatment remain, there is real progress. New therapies and earlier diagnosis options are giving individuals and families more hope than ever before.

As we reflect on both the history and the present, we recommit to shaping a future where everyone—no matter their background—can access the care they deserve.

This month, we honor the strength and resilience of everyone living with Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) and hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD)—and those still searching for answers.

The journey to understanding your symptoms, getting a diagnosis, and finding the right care can be long and frustrating. It takes courage to advocate for yourself—and so many of you also advocate for others in your community. That perseverance matters.

As a telehealth medical genetics practice, we’ve worked with hundreds of individuals who’ve had questions about EDS. Genetic testing isn’t always needed—but when it is, we can guide you through every step, from deciding whether testing is right for you and ordering the testing if needed, to understanding what your results mean for you and your family.

💙 If you're still searching for answers or wondering what steps to take next, we’re here as a resource. https://www.genomemedical.com/individuals/

This month, and every month, we stand with the EDS and HSD community. Your voice matters. Your story matters. And there is hope ahead.

May is ALS Awareness Month — a time to share hope and look forward to better care for people with ALS.

ALS is a serious disease that affects the nerves and muscles. It can be very hard for patients and families. But science is moving forward, and there’s real progress.

We now know that some types of ALS are linked to changes in certain genes. This is why genetic testing is so important. It can:

✅ Help explain why someone has ALS
✅ Show if a person might qualify for new, targeted treatments
✅ Help families plan for the future

Each genetic test adds to our understanding and helps scientists find new ways to treat ALS.

Let’s keep moving forward — for better care today, and new discoveries tomorrow. Learn more in our blog:

Happy DNA Day! Today we’re celebrating the discovery of the DNA double helix and the amazing progress that’s followed to help improve lives, especially for those living with rare diseases.

Thanks to breakthroughs in genetic testing more families are finally getting answers. In fact, the chances of finding the genetic cause of a rare disease have gone from just 10–20% to as high as 25-50% or more in some cases, especially for children and those with undiagnosed conditions.

What does this mean for patients and families?
✅ Faster, more accurate diagnoses
✅ Personalized treatment plans
✅ Better support for family planning
✅ Fewer unnecessary tests and procedures

On , we’re celebrating the scientists, doctors, and rare disease communities who make this progress possible—and the hope that genetic answers are bringing to more families every day.
