Regardless of where you live or which health insurance policy you carry, if you suffer a life- or limb-threatening injury in San Francisco, the ambulance will bring you to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center. Once there, you’ll find our team of UCSF Orthopedic Department surgeons, specially trained to mend complex fractures all over the body. Having so much at stake –with p

ossible out-comes ranging from lifelong disability to full recovery– you’ll receive well-orchestrated care led by internationally-recognized “surgeons’ surgeons.”

Since 2005, we’ve put on the largest annual orthopedic trauma surgical course in the US, drawing instructors and attendees from over 20 countries and 40 states each year. In 2009, we brought our NIH-funded research labs, surgical training facilities, and administrative offices together under one roof and one name: Orthopaedic Trauma Institute. With a secure base at home, our group has also turned outward, founding the renowned Institute for Global Orthopaedics and Traumatology, dedicated to creating sustainable academic collaboration with surgical educators in developing countries. As our reputation has grown, other hospitals and networks have been seeking out our expertise. Fireworks Safety
Fireworks are a staple for Fourth of July celebrations in the U.S. The thrill of fireworks, however, can be dangerous. On average, 230 people visit the emergency room every day with fireworks-related injuries in the weeks around July 4. Most of these injuries are to the hands and fingers.

The UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and the Orthopaedic Trauma Institute are pleased to welcome David Lowenberg, MD, to our faculty as a professor.

About Dr. David Lowenberg
Dr. David Lowenberg, MD, specializes in treating bone infections, nonunions, and limb salvage. Dr. Lowenberg received his undergraduate degree at UC Davis, his medical degree at UCLA, and his internship and residency in orthopaedic surgery at UCSF. Following residency, he practiced as a full-time faculty member in the Departments of Orthopaedic Surgery at UCSF and Stanford University School of Medicine.

This fall, he has relocated back to UCSF from Stanford, where he will continue supporting a program for treating musculoskeletal ailments he developed throughout his career.

He is a past President of the Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction Society of North America, Past President of the Foundation for Orthopaedic Trauma, and Past-President of the Osteosynthesis and Trauma Care Foundation International (OTC International), which is composed of 24 chapters around the world with a membership of over 4,000 orthopaedic traumatologists. He is a Distinguished Landstuhl Scholar with the Department of Defense.

His clinical and research interests are treating osteomyelitis and nonunions, fracture biomechanics, and basic science of musculoskeletal infections and biofilm. He is well-published in limb salvage and the treatment of devastating limb injuries. He is also co-director of the Buncke Microsurgical Research Laboratory, where his research was on perfecting techniques for limb transplantation via immunotolerance.

He has 75 peer-reviewed articles and book chapter publications and over 450 regional, national, and international lectures on osteomyelitis, nonunions, malunions, and trauma.

The UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and the Orthopaedic Trauma Institute are pleased to welcome Kudret Usmani, MD, to our faculty as an assistant professor.

About Dr. Kudret Usmani
Dr. Kudret Usmani, MD is a Hip & Knee Reconstructive surgeon based at the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Washington Hospital Healthcare System, Fremont, specializing in trauma and reconstructive arthroplasty.

Dr. Usmani received her medical degree from Cooper Medical School of Rowan University and her Bachelors in Chemistry and Psychology from Carnegie Mellon University. Residency at Cooper University Hospital. Fellowship in Orthopaedic Trauma at Grady Hospital with Emory University in Atlanta, GA. Fellowship in Reconstructive Arthroplasty at UPMC Magee-Women's Hospital in Pittsburgh.

Throughout her education and training, she has received multiple awards for academic excellence and scholarships.

Dr. Usmani's extensive training and experience will enable her to offer comprehensive evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment options tailored to the individual needs of her patients.
She also speaks multiple languages, including Urdu, Spanish, and Hindi which will benefit her patients, colleagues, and community partners.
