Videos released this week:
- Anger and Mental Health
https://youtu.be/B2fITqOihCo

- Smiling and Mental Health
https://youtu.be/qzAARUIhxUw

After a 1 minute recap of each video, I’ll be available for questions on these topics or any other related to Mental Health.

- Anger and Mental Health: Anger arises when we perceive something to be unfair, important, and that we can't do much about it immediately. Once one is aware of their anger, then someone has an opportunity to deal effectively with this. This may involve methods to decrease or eliminate anger, usually by reframing a situation. At other times, it is useful to channel or redirect anger, to fight strategically for what you deem to be fair. Unregulated anger usually triggers anger in response, which tends to escalate and be unproductive.

- Smiling and Mental Health: Genuine smiles signal both socially, and to the self, that one feels happy. Smiling is correlated with better health, greater resistance to infection, and enhanced social connections. Smiling can be contagious. Social, or Duchenne smiles, where the lips curl up but the eyes don't light up, conveys that an emotion other than genuine happiness is being felt.

**** Next week, July 15th, there will be no live Q & A. Instead, I'm encouraging viewers to use the Reddit channel (link below) to give feedback and ideas about what they enjoy or dislike about the channel, the videos, what they may want to see in the future, or other topics that come to mind. *********

Videos released this week:
- Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) and ADHD
https://youtu.be/NUSBO_v7bvk

- Sunosi for ADHD?
https://youtu.be/-8mBkwl8Bf4

After a 1 minute recap of each video, I’ll be available for questions on these topics or any other related to Mental Health.

Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) and ADHD: The ability of MAOIs to boost dopamine and norepinephrine make them appear to be a good fit for ADHD. But only a handful of studies, numbering less than 100 patients have explored the benefits of these drugs for those with ADHD. All of them looked at deprenyl/selegiline, which, in addition to being an MAOI, also is catabolized to methamphetamine and amphetamine. Most MAOIs also require some caution in use due to interactions with other medications and with certain foods.

- Sunosi for ADHD?: Sunosi (solriamfetol) is a dopamine and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor approved for treating daytime lethargy from narcolepsy or obstructive sleep apnea. Phase III studies support that it can be effective in addressing ADHD symptoms, and FDA approval (as of July 2025) is pending. Whether Sunosi will prove more effective for ADHD than Wellbutrin remains unknown.

Our world seethes with anger. Anger can be directed towards productive or destructive ends. Learning more about anger can help you understand what you're feeling, and whether it makes sense for you and for society to nourish that anger, or to reframe what you are experiencing.

How to understand and use anger productively, not destructively. A primer for protesters, police and politicians.

Eating a healthy diet helps maintain a healthy body and brain. But many promoters push superfoods as the cure to mental health conditions, cancer, or even to extend life. But particularly if the aim is to boost levels of neurotransmitters, there are a number of biologic factors that are likely to constrain the impact diet has on brain functioning.

A deep dive into the first antidepressants, the monoamine oxidase inhibitors, reveals some of the complex interactions between diet, medications, and mental health.

Food is more likely to interfere with medications, rather than act like medications, as shown by why almost nobody uses the oldest class of…

Videos released this week:
- Methylene Blue and ADHD
https://youtu.be/S2kMiihKJmE

- Left Brain / Right Brain - What’s the Difference?
https://youtu.be/SsnikCTMG6Q

After a 1 minute recap of each video, I’ll be available for questions on these topics or any other related to Mental Health.

- Methylene Blue and ADHD: Methylene blue is a textile and paper dye that's been around for 150 years. It also has antibiotic activity, is effective in shuttling electrons to hemoglobin (and other molecules) to rescue people from methemoglobinemia and cyanide poisoning, and also has MAOI, anti-inflammatory and mitochondrial boosting properties. But so far there is no research on its use in ADHD, and only a handful of (encouraging) studies on using methylene blue for bipolar depression and dementia.

- Left Brain / Right Brain - What’s the Difference?: Neuroscientist and psychiatrist Ian McGilchrist has written extensively about a more nuanced view of what the left and right hemispheres do, with an emphasis more on how they work than on whether they handle separate tasks. The verbal left brain is good at analyzing individual pieces of data, whereas it is the right hemisphere that seems most adept at developing a comprehensive, holistic picture of the world.

Videos released this week:
- Amantadine for ADHD
https://youtu.be/VtYhST2hhnE

After a 1 minute recap of each video, I’ll be available for questions on these topics or any other related to Mental Health.

- Amantadine for ADHD:

- Amantadine for ADHD: Amantadine as one of the very first anti-viral agents, effective at treating and preventing influenza A. It was then found useful in Parkinsonism, and was a mainstay of treating that neurological conditions for decades, presumably because of dopamine boosting ability. More recently, amantadine has garnered the attention of researchers because it has anti-inflammatory, and glutamate blocking properties. Limited evidence indicates it can be helpful for some individuals with ADHD.

https://youtu.be/Jyv1ujkGh-Q

After a 1 minute recap of each video, I’ll be available for questions on these topics or any other related to Mental Health.

- Ma*****na and ADHD:

Daily use of ma*****na is associated with low energy, disorganized thoughts, memory problems, and lower motivation - yet small studies in select populations of individuals with ADHD suggest that it might actually be helpful for addressing symptoms of ADHD. We don't yet have good markers to suggest who might have such positive responses.

- Centanafadine for ADHD? - Maybe a Triple Reuptake Inhibitor for ADHD:

As of June 2025 centenafadine, a norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin reuptake inhibitor, is still under review by the FDA. But published studies indicate that for many, this might be a well tolerated and effective non-stimulant medication for inattention, impulsive, and hyperactive symptoms of ADHD.

Videos released this week:
- Acetylcholine and ADHD: Dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin get most of the attention, but acetylcholine is more abundant, and at least as important as these other neurotransmitters in both the brain and the body. A new agent for schizophrenia that works on acetylcholine may help bring more attention to the role this neurotransmitter plays in several prefrontal cortex executive function circuits.

https://youtu.be/QsSakr3kfgY

- DNA Testing for ADHD?: ADHD shows quite high rates of heritability, but we are no longer in the era where researchers are looking for a single dopamine receptor gene that explains this. ADHD is polygenic, meaning that specific variants of hundreds of different genes contribute to the likelihood of developing ADHD. Despite claims to the contrary, currently genetic testing is not able to tell you what medications will work well for treating your ADHD symptoms.

Videos released this week:

https://youtu.be/BVr669v13yY

- Lying and ADHD
https://youtu.be/40bPK3FORDA

After a 1 minute recap of each video, I’ll be available for questions on these topics or any other related to Mental Health.

- Lead and ADHD: Fifty years ago, before lead was removed from gasoline, the US median lead blood level in children was above 15 ug/dl. An association exists between blood lead levels and later development of ADHD, for levels, and levels as low as 3.5 ug/dl are not considered safe. We've prevented millions of cases of ADHD with this intervention, yet in the US right now, the president has proposed burning more coal (a significant source of environmental lead) and giving utilities an exemption from burning it cleanly.

- Lying and ADHD: It's often stated that those with ADHD are more prone to lying. Others claim that those with ADHD are more honest than the average person. But there are different kinds of falsehoods - simple untruths, spur of the moment attempts to avoid responsibility (reflexive lies) and premeditated attempts to deceive (reflective lies). It is possible, but unproven, that ADHD increases the likelihood of uttering falsehoods i the first two categories, and decreases the third type.

05/29/2025

In 2020, Trump hid how sick he was from COVID, yet now he suggests that Biden wasn’t candid about his prostate cancer or physical and mental decline. Much of Biden’s apparent decrepitude seem attributable to symptoms of Parkinsonism. In contrast, it is Trump who more pervasively and severely shows signs of prefrontal cortex failure - deficits in executive function leading to misidentifying individuals, rampant distractibility, trouble completing sentences, emotional dysregulation, and impulsive speech and decision making.

We should be paying more attention to the health of our leaders.

Some conditions impair functioning while others primarily affect appearances.

- Paranoia and ADHD:
https://youtu.be/qMf-ALHA99w

- I’m Dr. John Kruse: This video is just a brief introduction to the YouTube channel with a description of how I became involved in working with adults with ADHD.

- Paranoia and ADHD: Paranoia is an irrational or excessive fear that one is being persecuted, harassed or threatened. Our world has become increasingly dangerous, and has also seen a rise of conspiracy theories creating disasters where they don't exist. ADHD itself increases the risk for being diagnosed with psychosis, and amphetamine based stimulants can also increase the risk of developing psychosis. But in addition, the propensity of individuals with ADHD to not hear or see information, miss social cues, and respond to interactions in atypical ways all increase the possibility of mistakenly interpreting benign exchanges as threatening situations.
