As your child begins to babble and says his first words, support your little one's early communication efforts by following the two R's: Recognize and Respond. Recognize your baby's signals – a facial expression, eye contact, or reaching. Respond to these signals as communication. Let the baby know, "I heard you!" This encourages your baby to communicate more. You are also demonstrating that conversations have two sides and that both partners get a turn. This will help your baby begin to predict how you will respond and helps makes conversations exciting for both of you. The words will come in time. The RiteCare Childhood Language Centers of California provides speech, language, and literacy therapy services free of charge at 15 locations across California.
