“Not a trailer for crazy people,” he said, “but a trailer for ‘optimal mental health.’”

“Please honor Grayson by being kind to one another. If that becomes his legacy, we could ask for nothing else.”

Statement made by Eric and Terry Murray, parents of PGA TOUR winner Grayson Murray who recently lost his life to su***de.

My dear friend Sam Weinman and I spend a good amount of time talking about our emotions, our struggles and our overall wellbeing.

I love Sam’s writing and in his most recent article this is what I was drawn to:

*** Roughly 25 percent of the population have a diagnosable anxiety or depressive disorder.

*** But su***de remains an elusive topic, hindered further by misinformation.

*** I saw someone on social media say about Grayson taking his own life, ‘I just don’t understand why …’ I just wanted to say, ‘You should thank God every day that you don’t understand!!’ Unfortunately, you don’t know until you know.”

*** “People like to think in a binary fashion. As in, ‘that person is mentally ill. That person is not mentally ill,’’

*** In reality, Lardon said, mental illness exists on a spectrum, and it’s more prominent in professional sports than people realize.

*** Dr. Lardon said he dreamed of a “mental health trailer” at tour sites, where players could seek counseling or meditate as easily as they could run on a treadmill or re-grip their wedges.

*** “Not a trailer for crazy people,” he said, “but a trailer for ‘optimal mental health.’”

*** It starts with hard conversations, but none harder than the kind required after it’s too late.

Caregiving is a documentary film that explores the challenges many caregivers face, while offering insights and resources to empower their caregiving journeys.

Caregiving sheds light on the often unseen trials and triumphs of those who are caring for loved ones, and the professionals dedicating their lives to this field.

By amplifying diverse voices, the film aims to build bridges of understanding and support for caregivers everywhere.

This is a documentary by PBSS and WETA Washington, D.C., with executive producer Bradley Cooper set to release in the spring 2025.

The Caregiving Project will tell the story of caregiving through lived experience, expert opinions, thought leaders, practitioners, and loved ones. From copi...

I love the impact city parks can have on wellbeing.

I am proud to serve on the Gardens of Golden Gate Park gala committee for the second year and 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐆𝐚𝐥𝐚 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝐌𝐚𝐲 18.

How I go involved…

In March 2020 I was on my way to NYC for work.

When I got there, I developed symptoms of and eventually 𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐂𝐎𝐕𝐈𝐃.

I had to self-quarantine in Room 1905 at the Hotel Sheraton Tribeca for close to 90 days.

While that experience was physically taxing, in many respects 𝐦𝐲 𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐚𝐫 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 and even though this is my work, I still struggled.

During that time, from an emotional wellbeing perspective, 𝐈 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐝 𝐚 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐛𝐢𝐫𝐝𝐬.

I found myself walking the streets of Soho with 𝐚 𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐡 𝐛𝐚𝐠𝐠𝐢𝐞 filled with bird seed, 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐢𝐫𝐝𝐬.

There were no cars and very few people which made this possible.

When I got back to San Francisco, the Executive Director of the Gardens of Golden Gate heard my story and asked if I would be interested in getting involved.

Given my work in emotional wellbeing, and belief of 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐢𝐧𝐡𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐲 (𝐛𝐢𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐲 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐞) 𝐢𝐧 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠, I thought it was a great fit!

Last year’s gala was a blast and this year’s will be even better!

Hope to see you there!

Please save the date and we look forward to seeing you for this year’s Gala on Saturday, May 18. Interested in sponsoring this event to support the Gardens? If so, please let us know! Stay tuned for additional exciting information about this year’s event coming soon.

Many of our military members, law enforcement and EMS continue to fight a silent war against mental health challenges during their service and long after their service ends.

Hold the Line summit was created and sponsored by Guardian Revival and Tunnel to Towers Foundation as a way to foster human connection, provide wellbeing support, deepen existing relationship and form new ones.

In preparing for my keynote and panel:

>> I am grateful for the new relationships formed in my life;

>> Deeper human connections that have occurred working with the team;

>> And overall upliftment in my wellbeing in ways that did not occur to me.

All of which I am excited to build on next week!

For those in the New York are, please join us as we amplify much needed conversation around emotional wellbeing and provide tangible support and honor the resilience of our service members.

Comparison is the thief of joy.

A friend shared this daily update they received from the Head of Engagement at Wake Forest where their son is a student.

In their words, “Usually the updates are about activities on campus to help parents feel connected, but occasionally they are more thoughtful and reflective, like this one”.

______________________________

I like these lines:

*** If comparison is the thief of joy, perhaps the antidote to that would be looking at people, places, and things with realistic eyes, acknowledging we all have problems and flaws.

*** It may mean looking at our lived experience gently and with love, but letting go of an unrealistic ideal of perfection.

Ian – I particularly like the notion of looking at ourselves gently and with love – being supportive to ourselves against our own narratives.

*** The reality is we all have struggles. We all have insecurities. We all have problems. Even people who seem to have everything – beauty, brains, wealth, loving families, good health, a great job, their school looks like 100% of fun 100% of the time – they have problems too.

Ian: We’re all human, we all have our challenges. Some we laugh about, some we don’t talk about. But no matter what, it’s all real.

We call those challenges at I M Human – Life Moments.

Two of my most beloved Wake Foresters introduced me to a favorite quote they share in common: “Comparison is the thief of joy.” I came to love this quote too. It’s short, easy to remember, and absolutely true. I share this quote every year because [...]

Feeling Like You Are The Only One & Losing Sight of What Rest Is

REST - many of us see rest and the need to rest as shameful. Myself included.

EMOTIONAL ISOLATION - whenever you start talking about your own emotional ups and downs you notice that others start sharing theirs too.

COMMUNITY - What a huge community of support and encouragement there could be if we talked about our emotions in a different way.
__________
Katherine May’s book – Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times – does a wonderful job of using snow and winter to talk about emotional isolation and the power of rest.

I loved how Katherine talks about snow in On Being’s interview with Krista Tippett.

Snow has the same peaceful impact on me.

__________

Below are areas of the interview that resonated:

1 EMOTIONS
** It feels like everybody else is carrying on as normal, and you’re the only one with this storm cloud over your head.

** And that’s a very particular feeling, because it brings up loads of emotions,

** not just sadness, but also a sense of paranoia, a sense of humiliation,
a sense that we’ve uniquely failed.

** And actually, whenever you start talking to people about your own winterings, they start telling you about theirs, and you realize what huge community there could be if we talked about this in a different way. IAN: THIS IS POWERFULL.

2 REST
++ And to see rest and the need for rest as shameful,  IAN: I RELATE TO THIS.

++ like rest is something that you only ever get forced into or that it has to be commodified, somehow, too — that rest can only be something that you’ve paid to do; a fancy retreat or a day at spa, or whatever it is that you fancy doing.

++ And I think we’ve just got that all wrong.

++ Rest should be part of the simple rhythm of our day and of our week and of our year, in different ways.

++ I don’t think we know what rest even is anymore, to be honest. I think we’ve lost track of that.

3 PHASES IN OUR LIFE
^^ Wintering is a metaphor for those phases in our life when we feel frozen out or unable to make the next step, and that that can come at any time, in any season, in any weather; that it has nothing to do with the physical cold.

^^ Where the framing of Wintering, of the understanding of the seasonal, cyclical, of the rhythmic nature of these things gives you a frame, actually, to live with it.

^^ “Our winterings” — as you said, not only to live with it, but to wrest from it what it can teach you.

Not that you would wish for it or wish this thing for anything else, but, you said,

“They are asking something of us,” our winterings.

“We must learn to invite them in” and to stop wishing it were summer.
