In this week's , Wycliffe Nyokangi — a rising third-year at Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine — shares what he loves most about :

I’m drawn to foot and ankle surgery because it’s a field that’s always evolving, and I’m excited to be part of that change. Whether it’s through arthroscopy or reconstructive surgery, the chance to directly improve a patient’s mobility and quality of life is incredibly rewarding. As I continue my education, I’m eager to learn new techniques and eventually apply them to help people who may not have had the best access to care in the past.

Today's is on Alexandra Fitzsimmons, a first-year podiatric medical student at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine School of Podiatric Medicine, who shares why she's passionate about a career in foot and ankle surgery:

What interests me most about foot and ankle surgery—particularly trauma—is the immediate, hands-on impact it allows me to have on patients’ lives. Foot and ankle trauma cases often involve complex fractures, dislocations, or soft tissue injuries that require precise surgical intervention to restore alignment, function, and long-term mobility. I’m drawn to the challenge of making critical decisions under pressure and the technical skill involved in reconstructing anatomy. The ability to help someone recover from a life-altering injury and return to walking, working, or simply living without pain is incredibly motivating and reinforces my passion for this field.

Rami Alkhadra — a fourth-year medical student at Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science & recipient of the 2025 Michael L. Stone, DPM, Outstanding Professional Conduct Award — shares what he loves most about foot and ankle surgery in this week's :

What fascinates me most about foot and ankle surgery is not just the precision of the craft but the profound human impact behind every case. I’ve witnessed patients endure years of pain, held back from life’s simplest joys of playing with their children, taking a walk, or even standing without agony. To be the one who restores their freedom is both a privilege and a calling.

Foot and ankle surgery is more than technical mastery; it is an act of empathy, a testament to the power and art of surgery. Every time I don my surgical gown, I’m reminded of the immense privilege and responsibility of being a foot and ankle surgeon. The trust my patients entrust in me, the meticulous precision required, and the chance to positively impact their lives is no greater honor. Even on the most demanding days, this purpose recharges me, reinforcing my passion for a field where every procedure holds the power to change a life.
