Many of of you may not know that I'm doing a certification in functional medicine through The Institute for Functional Medicine. As a part of the learning process, I'm doing a month-long elimination diet so I can be better equipped to prescribe them to patients when it's appropriate. Here's a little look at some meal prep I did yesterday to get ready for my first week. Just like in Chinese medicine, functional medicine centers around a happy gut. Food is medicine!
........................................

#MealPrep for week one of my #elimination diet included roasted veggies, gluten free apple butter bread, homemade hummus, and split pea and lentil veggie soup. For dinner tonight we’re having dill seasoned salmon with rice and those roasted veggies. So far things are going all right, but I did miss my morning coffee!

Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are not only in cleaning supplies, lotions, and makeup, just to name a few, but also in pads, tampons and many other feminine hygiene products. What's particularly troubling about that is the level of absorption of EDCs though our mucosal membranes. Knowledge is power. Buy organic cotton tampons and pads or use me********on cups when possible.

It's always good to be aware of the chemicals we may be exposing ourselves to. EDCs are linked to increase cancer risk, lower fertility, disrupted me********on, early menopause, early menarche, among other health concerns. When ever possible, purchase products that are organic, fragrance free, and that have few ingredients.

[07/28/20]   Hello everyone,

I hope you are thriving and feel supported during SiP. I'm back in the clinic seeing patients at a limited capacity during COVID. Among many other safety precautions, I am seeing only one patient at a time with no one else allowed in the clinic during your treatment and there will also be a 15 minute disinfecting and airing out time after every treatment. As a result, there is limited availability for now. My hours are Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:00 to 7:00. Appointments can be made as usual.

All patients returning to the clinic will be asked to read and sign a COVID Agreement, which details the lengths I am taking to keep everyone healthy and safe as well as what I expect from all visitors of the clinic.

If you have any questions, concerns, recommendations, I am always available. Just send me a text, DM, or email.

Warm Regards,
Brenda

[03/16/20]   Hello everyone,

I hope you are feeling well and have had the time and resources to prepare for this COVID-19 pandemic. To that end, I have to temporarily close my clinic until April 7th or until I receive further notice.

If you have any flu-like symptoms and/or trouble breathing, it's recommended you call your primary care provider or hospital nurse line. They will do an over-the-phone COVID-19 screening and tell you whether or not you should get tested. Please stay at home and self-isolate to the best of your abilities. I especially advise you to avoid spending time with those over 60 years old- they are the most in danger of complications from this infection.

Although my physical doors are shut for the time, my virtual doors remain open. I AM HERE FOR YOU. I am available for virtual appointments, drop-ship herbal and supplement prescriptions, and corrective exercise prescriptions. To make a virtual appointment, just reach out to me as you typically do.

We are in this together. Please, be kind to your neighbors, offer to help when and where you can, get some sunshine, drink plenty of water, work on your next Great American Novel while you have this downtime, and laugh- it's the best medicine.

To your health,
Brenda

Antibiotics are very helpful and can save lives, but should be used sparingly! Many of our common ailments are self-limiting, meaning they have a clear timeline and will go away on their own, and don't need antibiotics. Next time you are prescribed antibiotics, ask your doctor how necessary they really are.

"Getting more people to understand how quickly bacteria evolve antibiotic resistance might help people understand why they shouldn't be prescribed antibiotics. The drug resistance is not some abstract threat. It's real."

We know that bacteria can become resistant to antibiotics, but we've never seen it happen.

Chinese medicine has always taught to avoid ice and use heat to speed healing... everyday more studies are published to support our methods. This article shows the many downsides to icing swelling. Enjoy the read!

Mindful Schools

A psychologist walked around a room while teaching stress management to an audience. As she raised a glass of water, everyone expected they'd be asked the "half empty or half full" question. Instead, with a smile on her face, she inquired: "How heavy is this glass of water?"

Answers called out ranged from 8 oz. to 20 oz.

She replied, "The absolute weight doesn't matter. It depends on how long I hold it. If I hold it for a minute, it's not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I'll have an ache in my arm. If I hold it for a day, my arm will feel numb and paralyzed. In each case, the weight of the glass doesn't change, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes."

She continued, "The stresses and worries in life are like that glass of water. Think about them for a while and nothing happens. Think about them a bit longer and they begin to hurt. And if you think about them all day long, you will feel paralyzed – incapable of doing anything."

Remember to put the glass down.

Gut Bacteria Might Guide The Workings Of Our Minds

"Mayer thinks the bacteria in our digestive systems may help mold brain structure as we're growing up, and possibly influence our moods, behavior and feelings when we're adults. "It opens up a completely new way of looking at brain function and health and disease," he says."
