Ask the Coach: What’s the best way to mix cardio and weights?

We asked a few of our DIAKADI advanced coaches, and here’s how they approach it:

Brandon (.liftforlife):

“Match your workouts so they work with each other. If you want to get faster, do cardio on the same day as powerlifting. If you want to build conditioning, pair it with your muscle-building workouts. And if you’re working on endurance, save it for lighter days like mobility or skill work.”

Tracy ():

“I usually like to start with strength training since it takes the most energy, then wrap up with cardio. If running is your main goal, it’s smart to give it its own day alongside strength work. At the end of the day, the right mix really comes down to your personal goals.”

Darwin:

"Cardio and strength don’t have to compete - they can complement each other. Circuit training is one of my favorite blends: it keeps your heart rate high, challenges muscles in ways running or cycling can’t, and eases you into resistance training before cranking up intensity.”

Cardio and strength are not opposing forces—they’re training tools. The key is programming them strategically, so each enhances the other while moving you closer to your long-term goals.

Ask the Coach: “What does working out look like for you while traveling?”

We asked a few of our DIAKADI coaches how they stay consistent with fitness—even while on the move. Here’s what they had to say:

Coach Dustin:

"I obviously have my Workout Wherever Equipment Cube on hand. But in terms of effort, I tone down the intensity. I focus on a few compound movements to maintain muscle mass, and then I have the time and energy to enjoy all the other activities I want to do while traveling."

Coach Jo:

"When traveling, my favorite way to incorporate exercise is by including family and friends. You might be surprised how much the people around you will be down for a quick workout, like a five-minute 'exercise snack'! One of my favorites is to do each of the following exercises for 50 seconds, followed by a 10-second rest: squats, pushups, lunges, air rows, then finish with a plank."

Coach Dan:

"I like to simplify my program and reduce my volume to favor recovery and focus on strength maintenance. I arrange it in a full-body program that supersets lower-body and upper-body movements, and I slow my tempo down to be able to achieve a good amount of tension with lower weights. This makes it short and effective, so I can get back to exploring and relaxing!"
