We assist health center patients and community residents in all of San Francisco's neighborhoods to access and utilize available health resources to maintain and improve their health. AmeriCorps is the national service program that engages Americans of all backgrounds in service in the five priority areas of education, public safety, environment, homeland security, and other human needs. Sometimes
referred to as “the domestic Peace Corps,” AmeriCorps is a vital part of the growing National Service movement that follows in the footsteps of pioneer service programs such as the Depression-era Civilian Conservation Corps, Peace Corps, and VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America). AmeriCorps service gives its members the opportunity to impact change in under-served communities, gain valuable life experience, and take steps toward their own future goals. With the National Health Corps, serving side-by-side with clinic staff, you have the opportunity to be of service to your community and to learn about health careers. Over the past 30 years, more than 2,800 NHC members have completed more than 3 million hours of service. At a time of unprecedented need and severely limited resources, NHC members have the opportunity to make lasting contributions in the communities in which they serve. In 2022, NHC grew into two collaborative programs: NHC Public Health Leadership Corps (PHL) and NHC Community Health Fellowship (CHF) with members serving in multiple geographic locations across the country, including: Central California, Delaware, Florida, Greater Philadelphia, Northeastern Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and San Francisco. National Health Corps San Francisco began in 2019, and has since placed aspiring health leaders in community health centers, non-profit organizations, and the Department of Public Health, serving San Franciscans seeking essential health care services. As of 2024, 70 members have graduated the NHC San Francisco Program, and have gone on to pursue public health careers, graduate degrees in Public Health, Social Services, Public Policy, City Planning, as well as their PhD's and MD's.
