ACT UP/San Francisco News on ACT UP/SF meetings & actions; HIV/AIDS funding, prevention, treatment & cure in SF & beyond. ACT UP! Fight Back! Fight AIDS!

Greetings all ACT UP/SF (3rd generation) alums who are still on Facebook. Liz H here. Cleaning out my drawer recently I found some cash the group collected from various fundraisers. Yes, it's been sitting there 10+ years! I'd like to donate it to a good cause. I know there are many HIV-related organizations -- and LGBTQIA+, harm reduction, s*x worker, etc -- that would be appropriate. But I'm thinking a donation to an individual might have the most impact. A former group ally has serious medical issues after a severe case of COVID and a stroke, and he could use money to get training for a new career with a disability. It's probably futile to get any sort of group consensus -- and I've fallen out of touch with most of the core members -- but I thought I'd put this out there as an idea.

By now you've probably heard of chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine, two malaria drugs Trump is touting as a treatment for COVID-19. They've shown some activity in small studies, but can cause serious side effects and experts stress clinical trials are needed (several are underway).

Drugs used for decades to treat malaria may help people with the new coronavirus, but clinical trials are needed.

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle is a great source (despite the name, they do a lot of virology and immunology research too, especially around HIV) -- kudos to them for putting together these resources.

Here are a few of the papers our scientists are reading that you might want to check out, too.
