Hello, from Burton High School. Where today in staff meeting we spent time attempting to understand the errors in our paychecks. Where I facilitated two cooking class’ about methods to prepare vegetables. And during advisory we compared screen time averages, for which the teens clocked 6-15 hrs/day. From this epic bay-view I can confirm that we are not alright although most of us make it through most days, there are students on my roster who I haven’t seen since August. There are teachers who have left due to payroll issues and while I spend 7 hrs/day teaching about health, I do not myself have health care coverage yet. There is a sub shortage too so don’t dare call in sick while COVID and flu cases rise. The heat does not turn on in my classroom and I have personally walked three mice out of the building (two living, one deceased). As I leave school to join an overly crowded bus as the sunsets at 4:30, I think, it’s about time for an update from the front line of public education. There are two days till fall break which means a month out from winter break and in the words of my mentor back in September, “I am living for winter break.”🐶 PS. There are bright spots too I promise.

Re: Closing Up Shop
Dear Fans,

With a full heart, I must share that most of my herbal offerings will end this month, July 2022. It has been a joyful 8+ years of creating digital, physical, interactive and educational plant medicine offerings for you. Thank you as always, for your continued support of this work.

This decision is bittersweet. I will begin a full time job as a Health Science teacher at a SFUSD high school next month.

I am ecstatic to step into a new role and continue to offer herbalism within our local public schools. It does mean however that many of my other projects must scale back including my Patreon, online shop, herbal and gardening classes, newsletter, blog, social media and maintenance of the Medicine Garden at Alemany Farm.

I do expect some portion of these offerings to return at some point in some capacity. I do not know when that will be or what form the offering will take.

I know my top priority upon return to work as an herbalist will be working 1:1 with clients. Until then, into the cocoon I go.

Your support has meant the world to me. I hope the plants continue to guide and inspire you.

Very truly yours,
Bonnie Rose Weaver

🌿 I cannot stop creating herbs for people to use in their everyday lives.

✨Kami McBride has this book called The Herbal Kitchen. She writes about how our kitchens are the first place to start using herbs. In soups, stocks, sprinkles, honeys, vinegars. So here are some fresh ass herbs for my loyal patrons. Rosemary, Oregano and Chamomile. Blessings!

💫Want regular herb boxes delivered seasonally with locally grown herbs? Sign up on my Patreon, link in profile. It’s only $20/mo. And it’s totally rad and worth it. Why? Because its local, sustainable and consciously sourced. Because I’m constantly listening to the plants to create east-to-use products in small batches. Because they make great gifts and self care items. Because local herbalism is radical.

Yes, we have the ability to learn about our bodies and support them to build or release life. That is our choice and our power to decide for each one of ourselves.

Yes there are herbs and foods and lifestyle choices to reduce or expel a pregnancy. We have known how to regulate this for 1000s of years. Laws will not define this for us, it will merely make it less safe and more difficult to do what we have always done.

Emmenagogues or abortifacients are herbs that help release our uterine linings, are a part of an herbalists apothecary. Yes, we have the knowledge to encourage an “herbal abortion” yet medical abortions are safer and more reliable. Which is what I recommend to anyone wanting or needing to release a pregnancy for any reason. As much of a devout herbalist I am, certain care is best done in a western setting. Abortion is a great example.

I want to say that this fight over bodies is about control. And about controlling pleasure and about outdated ways of thinking that are less ancient than the wisdom of the plants and our wise bodies.

I want to say it’s disgusting and appalling and infuriating. I know you know this. I want to share my feelings with you in hopes to validate and connect with the feelings in your body. We are never going back to unsafe abortions. We are not allowing racist, classist, hateful, laws on our bodies. No.

Isn’t it strange and beautiful how we can witness how much we have changed in the last two years? A container of sorts we have all bore witness to as individuals and an international collective. For a long time I have marked the micro seasons of spring with the blooming of each flower. Daffodils, tulips, wisteria, roses. Here we are in the season of roses, hearts wide open. Two years of this pandemic reality, the bloom of each flower pierces me with the truth that we are never going back. The last time I saw my therapist irl she told me “this may be the new normal” and that might be the most revealing topic we ever discussed. Sorry dad.

I read this book called “ain’t burned all the bright” by Jason Reynolds and this phrase came to me. Like the silver linings of a peri-pandemic, post-George Floyd world. How we keep praying for freedom and how like healing, it is non linear and not always beautiful.

I struggle with the numbers at the bottom of my tax forms to sustain my life. I hear weigh the pros and cons of this herbal life. I wake up at dawn to pray and I sit with the plants to learn. After eight years in biz I must ask, is this my life’s work? I know I am here to serve the plants and I’m just wondering if this is precisely the path they want me to be on?

I sit with the reality that my main money making job, working for SFUSD has been cut from the budget. Perhaps Newsom will sign something to bring it back or I will find other work in the district. I came to teaching as a more stable career to herbalism. And here I am in the face of deep uncertainty. I lie in bed wondering if this what 33 feels like or is it long-haul sx?

The best thing that soothes my nerves after the break up is listening to Brené Brown, pretty much on repeat. She said in an interview w a priest, “everyone wants transformation but no one wants to change” and I think yes indeed. So perhaps this big change has truly been our transformation?

I dream of pianos and whales. I practice making art everyday. I make nourishing food for my self and I even vacuum. Talking to friends on zoom has become the new normal. As they say on The Daily, an audio file, “see you tomorrow.”
