Venting Negative Feelings– Is It a Good Thing? 06/26/2021

Venting Negative Feelings– Is It a Good Thing?

At one time, pillow pounding was all the rage (pun noted). But new research suggests that even verbal venting may have a down side. When I started this blog, I expressed the intention to be focused on new material rather than simply pointing to various things along the way, but I've been in a dry spell for new thoughts on various subjects that interest me, and I couldn't help noticing a great piece on one of my favorite web sites, so without further ado, …...

Thoughts on Zoom Therapy

Well, it's obvious that there's been a lot of telehealth going on for the last year, and it has gotten branded, as things do, with the name of one particular provider. Just like Kleenex, a brand of tissue, became a generic for tissues at one point, Zoom has gotten the brand recognition. But there are other platforms, and various practitioners use various platforms....

Depression Treatment Without Medication

I frequently get questions about treatment for depression without using medication, or going off medication for depression without relapsing. I'm going to summarize what I know and give my point of view about this. First and most importantly, nothing said here is treatment or a substitute for treatment. Major Depressive Disorder and related disorders can be life threatening. Prior to Covid-19,...

Anxiety Management 101

So many people continue to experience anxiety that I have summarized a few of my oft-repeated responses on dealing with it. Many of them also apply to managing negative moods in general. When in doubt, get professional treatment. Here’s one place to look Behavioral Health Treatment Services Locator for resources in the U.S. Here are some basic tips for managing anxiety:...

It Can Be Difficult, I Know– But Relax

I've been offline because, quite frankly, I've been engaging in as much self-care as needed, and posting here has taken a back seat. But that brings me back to some suggestions that I've made many times over the years to other people. One of them is this-- taking care of yourself isn't selfish. If you end up collapsing because you are over-tired and exhausted from caring for others, not only do you become unavailable to care for others, but someone has to care for you....

Ignore Your Feelings

So, did that get your attention? What's a therapist doing telling people to ignore their feelings? Aren't we, the therapists, supposed to help people get in touch with their feelings? Not necessarily. This is going to be a relatively short post, and it won't be as linked to studies, etc. as I normally like. But it came to my attention when I saw an online article titled "motivation is overrated." Going back and doing a web search to find it, there are too many hits for me to search for the original, so I can't link to it quickly....

More on Mindfulness

It's been a while. Like many Americans, I've been watching the news and riding the roller coaster. But something happened earlier today that brought me back to a kind of everyday mindfulness, which my Midwestern forebearers would have probably called "paying attention" or "keeping your mind on what you're doing." This fits in more with what many current writers have called "secular mindfulness," something taken from Buddhism but not connected to Buddhist doctrines, dogmas, etc....

An Inspirational Moment

I just have to share this, even though it's far from new content and completely off topic for this blog. In a time of radical wealth inequality, there is a billionaire who has given away an eight billion dollar fortune. At a time when not just income inequality but wealth inequality are hot topics, It's inspirational to hear of someone who didn't use their money to found yet another plutocratic, oligarchic dynasty. It’s Not Bad to Feel Bad

I usually try to post something at least monthly, but I have fallen short of that goal. I also try to post on a topic that is not too common, or that relates to a personal interest, But no topic has seemed both personal and topical, considering what has been going on in the news-- the bitterness of our politics, the continued public health crisis, social upheaval and conflict and here in California, the fires. Your Forgiveness is for You

I have not been posting very often because I continue to try to keep my original purpose of writing about things I haven't seen mentioned elsewhere, but this piece was just too good to not pass along: it's about forgiveness. The author makes a couple of points that I just want to highlight. The main one is the title of this post, which is that when we forgive, it's because having forgiveness in my heart is more healing for me than having feelings of anger, resentment, and fantasies of revenge. Restraint, Asking for Help

I recently saw a post on social media representing nurses and pertaining to our newly-reinvigorated struggles for equality. "Friendly reminder that nurses have to restrain violent, confused, intoxicated and belligerent people all the time. And we make it happen without crushing anyone's windpipe." It reminded me that I once worked in a setting where the staff were occasionally confronted with assaultive clients. [ 1,387 more word ]

Respect the Trauma of Others

I have been in much the same emotional state as those reading, I expect. I'll honestly admit-- I did everything in my power to avoid the actual video of George Floyd being killed. But it was so prevalent that I was exposed to it as someone else watched broadcast TV news. It would take a heart of stone-- or someone already numbed by too much trauma-- to not react. Antidepressant Cow

To find out how antidepressant cow works, you will need to read the article linked below. While antidepressant cows will not necessarily work for everyone, the good news is that there are other things-- multiple things-- that will do the job. I have not been diligently working on new content, but this article by Johann Hari is worth checking out. To me it seems ridiculous that we need to come back to some of this stuff-- the field of psychiatry/clinical psychology started with talk therapy and social/environmental interventions, after all. Waiting

Many years ago when I was a college student, I went to visit a friend who lived in exurban Connecticut. My friend was the third of that name and was so called "Buddy," the other names having been used on the first and second holders of the name. His father was an attorney handling business law, and quite successful. However, Buddy's dad had what some people would call a character defect-- impatience. [ 512 more words ]

Managing Health Anxiety

I am staying home like everyone else, surfing media like everyone else, most of it either humorous (my choice) or useless (most news as usual). But I ran across an item from someone who was writing as a self-proclaimed "recovering from health anxiety" person and it looked pretty good, so I am putting up the link here. The one thing I want to put in a word about is the cognitive distortion of catastrophizing. [ 582 more words ]

Do Therapists Give advice?

I started off as a peer counselor in an outpatient substance abuse treatment program-- I had stopped using mind altering substances in an addictive way for over a year and gave lots of advice to people who were trying to quit. One of the reasons I "turned pro" was that my way didn't work for everyone & I could see the limitations of advice giving as a way of helping others. [ 865 more words ]

Continue to Eat Right

Sorry to have been away for so long. I just had to come back with yet another study that showed eating a certain kind of diet can help depression. Hint: it isn't the "day after Halloween" diet plan. One of the academics quoted in the article basically says what a lot of people's grandmothers used to say: fresh air, exercise, and eat your vegetables. [ 124 more words ]

I’m Alive: Keep It Simple, Care for Self

Sorry for the long absence. When I find a good way to write about it while still maintaining appropriate professional boundaries (a good topic right there) I will. In the mean time, my basic approach is in the title, and I'm including a link which outlines the basics. Fortunately, keeping it simple is, in fact, simple. Mental Health Awareness Month

Recently I was with a group of people getting involved with Mental Health Awareness Month by discussing the question, What is mental health?" As the only full time professional there, I thought it would be good to remain silent and learn. Acceptance, Action, Self-Compassion

I can never get enough of this stuff. I don't have time to add some of my own thoughts right now, but I can't let this one pass without passing it on: it's always helpful to accept yourself, especially when it comes to dealing with your physical self. THIS INFORMATION WILL BE UPDATED. IF YOU SEE THIS NOTICE THE MATERIAL POSTED MAY CHANGE IN THE NEAR FUTURE, PLEASE CHECK BACK.
