Volunteer Arnie met Tibor—a 96-year-old Holocaust survivor from Budapest—while delivering a JFCS Passover Holiday Gift Bag to his home, and the two felt an immediate connection.
Soon after, they were matched through JFCS’ Friendly Visitors program, which pairs volunteers with older adults for ongoing conversation, support, and companionship.
The two have since met for meals, swapped memories, and even taken a trip to Fort Funston to watch hang gliders. Inspired by the outing, Tibor (who has mobility issues) even floated the idea of taking up hang gliding himself. "No legs required!" he joked in a letter to Arnie. “Imagine the thrill of soaring through the skies together,” he wrote.
Over lunch one afternoon, Arnie brought along his friend Paul, who, like Tibor, had lived through the N**i occupation of Budapest. Though they were just children at the time, they shared vivid memories, bringing history to life in a way few others could.
