A post-exercise infrared sauna session improves recovery of neuromuscular performance and muscle soreness after resistance exercise training.
A new study by Ahokas et al. (2023), found that a single infrared sauna session after resistance training helped athletes recover faster, feel less sore, and maintain explosive power compared to passive recovery. 🚀💪
🧪 Methods
👥 16 male basketball players
🎲 Randomized crossover: two trials per athlete, 1-week apart
💪 Exercise: complex resistance session (strength + plyometrics)
🔥 Recovery: Infrared sauna (IRS) → ~43 °C, 20 min
vs. Passive sitting recovery
📊 Outcomes: sprint, CMJ, leg press, soreness, recovery perception, sleep, HR/HRV, muscle damage markers
✨ Key Findings
🏀 Explosive jump (CMJ) preserved better with IRS vs passive recovery
🤕 Less soreness + better perceived recovery in IRS condition
❤️ HR ↑ during IRS; HRV ↓ during session → no overnight differences in HR/HRV
✅ IRS = helpful for performance + soreness recovery without harming autonomic recovery overnight
