Reflections on Sunday’s Yoga & Meditation Retreat Part 2...
As we opened the retreat, some shared they had lost their joy. Others shared they had nothing left to give themselves or others after handling work and guiding their children’s education from home during the pandemic. Others hadn’t taken time for themselves in months or even years! Many had not kept up a regular yoga practice first as studios closed and later as Zoom fatigue kicked in and did not feel as healthy and good in their bodies anymore. Many were holding upset over violation of women’s rights, extreme political and religious ideology division, and climate change and natural disasters in the US and around the world.
Wow - so much we are all carrying. So many knots, so much de-stressing to do and residue to release from the past 2.5 years. And so many of us not quite knowing how to do this and struggling alone, without necessarily having in person community back in place.
And so we began with breath, slowing it down, smoothing it out, dropping into our bodies. We danced to La Bicicleta by Carlos Vives and Shakira, to touch playfulness and fun. We set intention to further awaken our hearts and our will to keep leaning in the direction of growth, to cultivate more love and wisdom, to lift ourselves up in community, to honor our bodies. We practiced potent Himalayan Kundalini breath and kriya techniques to enliven the energy to support all the above and then asana to integrate and stabilize that energy.
We ate lunch together, enjoyed free time to breath the fresh ocean air and bathe in the lovely sunlight, hike or rest, and returned for coffee/tea and gluten free, vegan banana chocolate chip cookies that I love to bake with my daughter for these retreats. The joy of connection was so palpable - no one was ready to emerge from coffee, cookie and conversation time! But we did, into kirtan (chanting), calming breath and kriya on the bluffs overlooking the ocean, and a slow, nourishing, therapeutic afternoon asana practice. The light shining so brightly through everyone’s eyes in our closing circle said everything. We honored the experience of transformation in ourselves through these recent years and through our day together. What a blessing.
More than anything else I know, yoga supports one’s becoming an integrated human being. I bow in deep gratitude to my teachers and to this magnificent ancient wisdom tradition of yoga that continues to bestow its gifts with such full relevance to modern times.
I continue to teach some classes on Zoom and may soon begin in person small group meditation and breathwork circles at my healing arts office in Cow Hollow.
