According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), su***de is the second leading cause of death among those aged 10-24. This is deeply concerning, however, there is always hope in preventing tragedy by raising awareness on the topic or supporting your loved ones consistently. Edgewood is an excellent resource for Bay Area youth who may be struggling with suicidal thoughts. If your situation is urgent, call or text our 24/7 Crisis Stabilization Unit (415-682-3278) for immediate assistance or the 988 National Su***de Lifeline.

Celebrating a special day with our oldest nonprofit partner, Levi Strauss & Co. 💙

As part of Levi’s Community Day, volunteers joined us on campus to paint a vibrant mural, paint a gym wall, and beautify our garden, adding color, warmth, and care to the spaces where our youth grow and heal. We’re so grateful for Levi’s this 172-year-long partnership and for every volunteer who rolled up their sleeves to make Edgewood shine.

The Edgewood Fair, a beloved tradition now in its sixth decade, began as a modest garden fundraiser in Golden Gate Park’s Hall of Flowers—and has grown into a cornerstone of support for Bay Area youth. In the first photo, you’ll see our Auxiliary members carefully preparing their wares, likely the famous Edgewood Jam, to sell in support of Edgewood’s programs. In the second, our Auxiliary leadership is celebrating another beautifully executed Fair, a testament to their tireless dedication.
Over the course of 59 Fairs, much has changed, but the spirit of community and compassion has only deepened. This year alone, the Edgewood Fair welcomed more than 400 community members and raised $726,574 to support youth on their mental health journeys, shining as a true beacon of hope for children and families across the Bay Area. The Edgewood Fair has always been defined by unforgettable moments like these—made possible by the unwavering commitment, creativity, and generosity of our remarkable Auxiliary.

Established in 1993, Edgewood's Kinship Support Network has been a lifeline for families in need and best exemplifies how Edgewood innovates and scales impact. It was the first Kinship program in the country to support non-custodial family members, and a model that has been replicated in every state ever since.

The photo above shows Gloria and Tyneishna Bowers, whose story was impacted through our care during our early years, and Debra Johnson-Hall, a Kinship staff member and participant, with her grandchildren, serving as a more recent example of our network's reach, demonstrating how our commitment remains as strong and transformative today as it was in the beginning.

What better way to celebrate beautiful weather than with a Garden Party? 🌼
Last week, our incredible Auxiliary teamed up with staff to throw a campus-wide celebration: grilling together, enjoying cones from Mr. Softee, and making flower crowns with our youth. We are so grateful to the Auxiliary for once again showing up to uplift our young people and the staff who serve them every day.

Youth mental health is a growing public health priority as they are pressured in countless aspects of their lives. That is why the data from the 2022-2023 yearly National Survey of Children's Health reveals a major issue within our communities. Specifically, more than half (54%) of the adolescent demographic are having difficulties accessing mental health care. Organizations like Edgewood play a critical role in closing that gap; our work is essential for not only our immediate care being accessible, but our long-term plans as well.

Edgewood’s approach to education has evolved alongside our mission.

In our early days as the San Francisco Protestant Orphanage Association, children were taught directly by teachers employed by the organization or attended nearby Parkside School once we moved to our beloved Vicente Street campus. Over time, the “P.O. Kids” label became stigmatizing and no longer reflected who we served, especially as only about 6% of children in our care were orphans.

Today, as a youth mental healthcare nonprofit, Edgewood supports learning across our programs through play-and-learn activities, tutoring, and other enrichment that help young people build skills, confidence, and a sense of possibility.

For 175 years, Edgewood has been serving the San Francisco Bay Area community. What started as an orphanage during the California Gold Rush is now a full-service organization that provides the people, place, and path for exceptional youth mental healthcare.
Edgewood's headquarters has been located on Vicente Street in San Francisco for over a century. There have been changes to our beloved campus, but its natural beauty and welcoming community remain unchanged.
As Edgewood gears up to celebrate its 175th anniversary, we will highlight the history of Edgewood and honor the legacy of the people who have helped the community thrive.

This Volunteer Week, we’re celebrating every person who shows up for Edgewood and our community.

To our individual volunteers who give their time to support youth, families, and staff behind the scenes; to our Edgewood Auxiliary, whose energy and advocacy keep our mission moving; to our community volunteers who roll up their sleeves for events, gardening, kinship support, and more; and to our corporate volunteer partners who bring teams, resources, and heart to our campus, thank you.

Your time, care, and willingness to say “yes” help create safer, more welcoming spaces for the children, youth, and families we serve every day. We couldn’t do this work without you. Happy Volunteer Week from all of us at Edgewood.
